9:55am JANE
to CORCORAN. She said she was worried about ICKES'
Chicago property. ICKES then talked with CORCORAN. Latter, at
great length, discussed the victory dinner for Col. (R.R.) McCOR-
MACK in Chicago Monday night at which time ICKES' property was to
be presented to the Colonel. CORCORAN told ICKES he authorized
GEORGE BOWDEN to pay $4,274 to TOUHY, State's Attorney, back
taxes to forestall foreclosure and thus stop the presentation.
CORCORAN said he'd advise ICKES when he had talked with BOWDEN,
whom he is trying to contact now.
10:07am Secretary at OSS asking if Lt. (QUINN ?) SHAUGHNESSY had been
there. No. Word was left for him to call his office.
11:30am (Senator) LISTER HILL to CORCORAN asking how he came out. CORCORAN
said he placed (GANSON) PURCELL and BEACH together but doesn't
know how they came out.
3:00pm HUGH COX (Department of Justice) to CORCORAN stating, "I got my
second man." (He is probably referring to JOHN SONNET, Navy
Department). COX said that it is understood that "he'll" be Gen-
eral Counsel. COX said he had a little trouble with Judge
PATTERSON but that "he finally crashed through." COX also said
that "(HAROLD WILLIAM JUDSON took the oath this morning SO I'm
clear of this place. CORCORAN asked if COX was going to take
Miss MADDOX (Phon.) with him and COX replied that he's going to
wait and see what the situation is "over there" and see how long
he's going to be there. He will keep in touch with CORCORAN.
3:05pm
JOHN SERVICE to CORCORAN. SERVICE said he was downstairs and
CORCORAN told him to come on up.
3:15pm
JOHN KRYDEN (Phon.) of New York Times to CORCORAN. CORCORAN
said he's been down seeing the Senate off. JOHN asked for a few
more details for the piece he is writing for the Times Magazine
Section on BEN COHEN. CORCORAN then explained BEN'S social activ-
ities and additional background, his hobbies, etc. Anent the
political situation in England, CORCORAN said that BEN is what
might be termed a "native radical, knows the new labor government
very well, is close to them despite the fact that he was a good
friend of CHURCHILL.
3:25pm
WORTH CLARK to EDDIE LOCKETT. WORTH said he could spare a few
minutes now. They will get together for one-half hour in the
Carlton immediately for a talk.
3:47pm
General (LUCIUS D.) CLAY to CORCORAN asking to see him. CORCORAN
will see him next week. They discuss the possibilities of a
successor for SNYDER.
