- 2 - 11:35 AM MAURY MAVERICK to CORCORAN. CORCORAN said, "You're doing something terrible to me. You're ruining my relations with my best ent--General Cable Corporation--in which you're chiseling in on an award which was made to them at the Treasury. May I send down to you BILL YOUNGMAN and MAC WRIGHT so you 'll know what the situation is?" It was agreed YOUNGMAN and WRIGHT would see MAVERICK at the latter's office at 2:15 P.M. today. 11:45 AM CORCORAN to Senator PEPPER's office to BOB FOKES (Secretary to PEPPER) who is out. Latter will contact CORCORAN. 11:50 AM CHARLES MERKESON to CORCORAN. Latter said he had seen CLAUDE (PEPPER) this morning and worked out a 24-hour program. CHARLES said CLAUDE may take it on "himself" but CORCORAN said "we can handle it." CORCORAN said that PEPPER will begin reporting to him this P.M. 12:15 PM CORCORAN to D. WORTH CLARK telling him he told his "white one" to (MARTIN) PENDERGAST and latter is delighted. CORCORAN said, "But we've got to get together right after lunch." O.K. 12:18 PM CORCORAN to JAMES P. McGRANERY at Justice Department. McGRANERY was not in. He is still at the shore. A secretary told CORCORAN that GUS (VANECH, Department of Justice) might know. GUS told CORCORAN that JIM would be in about 5:30 P.M. today. CORCORAN asked GUS to remind him of two things: One, the Senate does not adjourn until Wednesday night and, two, S-F-R-V-I-C-E. CORCORAN asked GUS to ask JIM to tell CORCORAN "what to do about 'em." CORCORAN will be at home tonight. 12:45 PM ED PRICHARD to CORCORAN. Latter asked when BEN (COHEN ?) will be back and PRICHARD replied that he would probably be back this week. CORCORAN then asked PRICHARD to cable DON RUSSELL and tell him not to forget about HOWIE (CORCORAN) "because I want to begin to move HOWIE back because he made me a flat commitment he'd start to move the kid out.' CORCORAN asked PRICHARD if the latter would be at LINDEN'S (JOHNSON) dinner tonight and PRICHARD said no because he knew he was going to be discussed. PRICHARD said "this is strictly between us, but (Senator) BOB (LaFOLLETTE ?) talked to me this morning.' PRICHARD said, "It's about the Lands Division (in the Department of Justice). Now you see, TOM CLARK and LINDEN had talked about anti-trust and LINDEN talked to me about that the other night. Then today, BOB talked about Lands, which is an entirely different thing." CORCORAN told him not to take it and PRICHARD said he was not disposed to. CORCORAN said, "I'm sure you should not now go to the Department of Justice. I'm sure you should have that job I had at the Treasury 'the assistant', not 'an assistant secretary. This is a job that outranks 'em all." PRICHARD said there is no such job as "the assistant to the Secretary of the Treasury." He said there are 5 assistants-with a couple of vacancies. CORCORAN said PRICHARD should take one of these jobs because, "I think it's lawfully important, one, that you stay with this fellow (VINSON ?) close, that you should not get into anything where the volume of administrative baloney is such that you can't take your eyes from it. I would stay up where I was advisor to this guy and I would not go into the Department of Justice under any circumstances." PRICHARD said, "As to the latter, I'm fairly clear about that but I just stalled on it because CORCORAN interrupted him to ask, "Now, what are
