ED PRICHARD to CORCORAN (Continued):
they going to discuss about you in the Treasury?" PRICHARD said he
thought probably about one of the assistant secretaryships. PRICHARD
said he didn't want the General Counselorship and CORCORAN agreed.
PRICHARD said that the assistant to the Secretary of the Treasury
jobs are "flunkey" jobs. He would prefer a confirmed Assistant
Secretary position. Those at the dinner tonight will be, according
to PRICHARD: BOB (PATTERSON ?), TOM CLARK, FRED VINSON, TOM CORCORAN,
and LINDEN JOHNSON and probably one or two others. CORCORAN said he
would try to help him become Assistant Secretary of the Treasury.
CORCORAN said, "I will force them to put you in there."
12:55 PM
CORCORAN to BOB FOKES in Senator PEPPER's office to ask if he knew
anything about SMATHERS (of New Jersey). FOKES said that TOM CLARK
and PEPPER had talked about it. CORCORAN then talked with Senator
PEPPER and the following conversation took place:
C - CLAUDE, about young (GEORGE) SMATHERS (Former attorney in Miami,
Florida). I'm gonna have lunch with the Navy.
P - Well, listen
C - Did you get him?
:
P - You know, I didn't realize that JIM FORRESTAL was over with the
President. I had intended to call when I noticed he had been to
dinner with the President. Now, there is a fellow over there,
however, named KENNEY.
C- JOHN KENNEY?
P - JOHN KENNEY. He's always been very cooperative with me and in view
of the fact that TOM CLARK has been very much interested in the
matter, I can call KENNEY right now and ask him if he wouldn't
C - Well, let me tell you another guy to call
There's a guy
in
MATT CORREA's place now in the legal assistant place to the Secretary
(of the Navy), JOHN SONNETT, who was an Assistant District Attorney
up in the office in New York at the same time your boy friend
SMATHERS was down in Miami. Now, he's acting as legal assistant to
the Secretary right now and he's gonna see me at 6 o'clock this
afternoon. After FORRESTAL comes back, he's moving over with TOM
CLARK and the right way to handle this thing is for SMATHERS to come
with SONNETT. Get it?
P - I get you.
C - Now I'm wondering if you could call KENNEY this afternoon and then
call SONNETT this afternoon and then I'd finish it when I see him
this afternoon at 6.
P - I'll do 'em both!
C - O.K., because I think that way we can get it done but we gotta move fast.
P - I get you. I'll call both of them right after lunch.
C - Did you talk to TOM CONNALLY?
P - No, I didn't yet. I had to leave there before they finished that thing
and I've got to call back to TOM. They decided not to let anybody go
so I'm going to have to go it on my own.
C - When are you going?
P - I'm aiming at the middle of August.
C - Now you know that that's financed as a campaign expenditure.
