CORCORAN to JAMES P. McGRANERY (Continued):
agreed that this would be helpful and also suggested the possibility of
taking it up with LESLIE BIFFLE (Secretary of Senate). He said he would
give the matter further thought. The following conversation then took
place:
M - Say, I had lunch with our friend.
C - Yes.
M - McINERNEY.
C - Yeah.
M - Now, he said: "What's this all about, JIM?" so, he told me that
SERVICE puts up a hell of a fine appearance.
C - Uh, huh.
M - And he said that he has a very pleasing personality and a very
convincing manner.
C - Uh, huh.
M - And they didn't want any doubt about this because of the FBI and
they felt that that was the way to do it.
C - Uh, huh!
M - And that was his only reason for having him go in.
C - Yeah.
M - He said that he'd take the personal responsibility to see that
nothing happened.
C - Yeah. Well, he went in today.
M - Yeah.
C - So it's all over by now.
M - Yeah, yeah. But he said they--- there is absolutely nothing there
about SERVICE.
C - They didn't have anything on him.
M - That SERVICE is a very convincing fella', that he has a hell of
a personality and that was the best way of cleaning it up.
C - Yeah. Well, that's O.K. I trust your judgment on it implicitly,
sir.
M - All right.
