- 3 - 11:55 AM WORTH CLARK to CORCORAN (Continued): W - I told you, you know, yesterday, you had some information from somebody that the Western people were at loggerheads with ICKES. Now you saw from writing that they weren't. You know who they're at loggerheads with. By and large, ICKES can get active support from that group if this other situation were cleared up in his department, don't you see? T - Yeah. W - But as it is, he'll only have passive support. T - Well, I'm gonna have lunch then with the other fellow in the Department this noon and see if I can get him to get out. W - From my standpoint--I think from all of our standpoints--I'd rather see ICKES go ahead and forget about this thing for the present anyway, don't you see? T - Well, what I want to make sure-when you talk to DUD (phonetic) don't tell him about our telephone calls of yesterday. W - Oh, hell no. T - If this can come to you, I want you to have it. This is a great thing, boy, again. I keep thinking, as you refuse to fall for my blandishment, about this inter-mountain empire. W - No. T - This would be the inter-mountain empire. W - Well, of course, here is what it would do. You just spend a quarter of your time out there or a third. Of course, youcould be making speeches at every Chamber of Commerce and-- T - That's right. But it also ties in. I'm not even interested in just one state--I'm interested in your having the leadership of that region. W - Well, that's what I mean, that whole region. T - That's right. W - Then, of course, you've got your public lands--that's the grazing service-- and probably the forest service ultimately--they'd come over if I wanted-- T - If you went over there I think they'd come. W - I think they would. I know them so darned well. T - And I think another thing--I think you could work out the GUY GILLETTE thing and Rural Electrification would go in with you if you went over there. W - That might well be, too--and get him out of that mess he's in. T - That's right. W - And he's in a mess! T - Oh, he's in an awful mess. Whoever the hell advised him on that was nuts. W - Oh, yes. It's terrible. And it's just awful. And ROSE was talking to VIRGIL yesterday and she's all upset about it now. And that was frightful. I think there's a big, big fee in it and I think that's the reason he took it Well, anyway, I tell you--I'll come up--I may drop over, depending on-- T - I want to work on this little half-page LEVER memorandum. 12:55 PM Girl in office of ABE FORTAS, Under-Secretary of Interior, told MISS DE FALCO that FORTAS will be glad to have lunch with CORCORAN. They agreed on 1:15 at the Carlton.
