MORGENTHAU is out and that a Jewish member of the Cabinet would be a
nice thing. I think you ought to let LES know about the play right
away. (Last sentence made with emphasis) This is to put a Republican
in, a WILKIE Republican, who is a Jewish lawyer in California.
NC--You don't know the time when Hannegan had this understanding?
TC--This was in -- not so long ago. Hannegan I know has been on the
telephone telling him to let his name be thrown in and not to fight it
too hard. Now let me tell you some more. The CIO will be behind him
out there and behind it generally if ICKES isn't going to be it. Get it.
WC--Yeah.
TC--It has the earmarks of the whole play. It is a test of which crowd
is going to run this thing.
WC--I am surprised. I think Hannegan is just leading him on.
TC--Well, maybe but I think
WC--But nevertheless, it's a fact.
TC--You ought to move fast fellow.
WC--Yeah.
WC--I'11 slide up---
TC--Maybe that could be diverted into the Senatorship. I don't know.
But there you are, sir. All these things mean you ought to suggest that
to whoozis. You ought to get up there now.
WC--OK
TC-- All right.
WC--I 11 drop in after lunch if he is back from Jefferson Island yet.
TC--0. K.
11:59am CORCORAN to WORTH CLARK to locate (Senator) WHEELER and talk with
him tonight. It is important because of C.I.O. backing.
C--Now I think you ought to locate Wheeler and think you ought to get an
important call to talk to him tonight. I think this thing is hotter than
one knows, particularly this-. he made a flat agreement that he would keep
the present Under-Secretary and the other fellow whom that fellow REISING
was talking about. That's also part of the trade. All I'm saying is that
you talk with Wheeler tonight.
W--0. K. I've been thinking, of course, that don't go through.
C--Well, you don't know whether it will.
W--Well, Truman just won't do it that way.
