C.\nPERSONAL AND CONFIDENTIAL\nAugust 10, 1945\nBY SPECIAL MESSENGER\nBrigadier General Harry Hawkins Vaughan\nMilitary Aide to the President\nThe White House\nWashington, D. C.\nDear General Vaughan:\nI have learned from very confidential sources on the\nWest Coast, which I have found heretofore to be reliable, that\nBartley C. Crum is advising his friends that he is to be se-\nlected by the President to succeed Mr. Ickes as Secretary of\nthe Interior. Mr. Crum has also advised friends on the West\nCoast that he has been contacted by the National Broadcasting\nCompany which has requested his appearance on a nationwide\nhook-up at the time his name is submitted to Congress for\nconfirmation. In view of this information, I wanted to invite\nyour attention to the attached enclosure relating to transcripts\nof conversations obtained from a highly confidential source,\nwith which you are thoroughly familiar. You will observe that\nbeginning on page 6 of this memorandum there is a discussion of\nthe fact that \"Bart\" Crum is a candidate for the post of Secre-\ntary of the Interior and that the discussion considers the\npossibility of diverting Bartley Crum's interest to seeking the\nCalifornia senatorship left vacant by the death of Senator Hiram\nJohnson.\nIn view of the actions of Bartley C. Crum and the conver-\nsation in the attached transcripts, I am attaching hereto as\na second enclosure a copy of a memorandum which summarizes\ninformation contained in the Bureau's files relating to the\nbackground and activities of Bartley C.
