Washington, D. C. CO SUMMARY August 17, 1945 10:20 AM MR. PRESTON LEVIS, in Toledo, Ohio, to CORCORAN. CORCORAN says that he has talked to the whole board--all three of them--and from the Washington end they favor LEVIS' company (Owens-Illinois Glass Co. ?), but they can't give a favorable action because of a possible jurisdictional problem between Washington and the regions and because they don't know whether "the other fellows" will file an appeal, which, if they do, they have the statute time behind them on that appeal. CORCORAN says that he has worked on the Cincinnati and West Virginia angles and stressed some action in regard to them. CORCORAN will keep LEVIS advised of developments though he can't guarantee anything. CORCORAN says that down here they can't give an affirmative answer because they don't know the state of the record out in the region. 10:53 AM General PERSONS to CORCORAN. CORCORAN asked if he has heard anything on the (DWIGHT) PALMER, Jr. thing (CORCORAN is attempting to get him out of the Army). PERSONS says no, but a letter was sent Tuesday and that he (PERSONS) will be advised as soon as it comes in. CORCORAN says (Senator) LISTER (HILL ?) is pushing him on it. 11:40 AM CORCORAN to CLEMENTS, in Senator PEPPER's office, who was out. CORCORAN wants to send a message to PEPPER in London. He was advised to send it to FRANCIS FLAHERTY, State Department, and he will put it in the diplomatic pouch. O.K. 12:25 PM MISS DE FALCO to CORCORAN, who is in BEN COHEN'S office. She told him the Chinese Ambassador (DR. WEI TAO-MING) had called and wants CORCORAN to call him at North 9000 before l o'clock. She also told him that ARNOLD KIEHN is waiting. CORCORAN will call her back in about five minutes. 1:25 PM JOHN FLEMING (F.E.A. ?) to YOUNGMAN, who asked about PAUL CRAM (phonetic). FLEMING said he had talked to the Civil Service Commission and they said they would take steps to get it to the Control Room. FLEMING is to check with them in a couple of days. 1:55 PM CARL RIKER (phonetic), from Sterling Products, Inc., Newark, New Jersey, to YOUNGMAN. RIKER told YOUNGMAN that regarding the Selective Service classification of HUFF (phonetic), "one of those hot ones," the President had denied the appeal and his board had placed him in 1-A again. RIKER said that HUFF is from Massachusetts. RIKER said he had thought he would take it up with HUFF's board on the basis of the new directive that no one over 26 is to be inducted; that HUFF will be 30 in a short time; however, he didn't want to do anything yet because he thought TOM (CORCORAN ?) had talked to someone about it and he didn't want to put anyone in the middle on it. YOUNGMAN told him to go ahead and take it up with HUFF's board. RIKER said he also had a wire from Peru that RYERSON is to report for induction on the 21st, and he thought he would send a wire to Peru asking them to defer RYERSON in view of the above directive. YOUNGMAN said he thought TOM had done something about RYERSON, but that RIKER should go ahead and send the wire. 2:31 PM JOSH LEE to CORCORAN advising that "he" is calling HARRY WHITE (Assistant Secretary of Treasury ?) now and Mrs. SHIPLEY (Passport Division, State
