Washington, D. C. CO SUMMARY August 27, 1945 9:30 AM CORCORAN for COLONEL D. H. MORRIS, JR., Surplus Properties Division of the War Department, asking if he and YOUNGMAN can have lunch with MORRIS at 1:00 'clock at the Carlton. O.K. 9:51 AM CORCORAN to EDWARD PRICHARD asking if he had learned anything about "that thing." (Funds of ARNOLD KIEHN ?) PRICHARD said he had called FRANK COE and that they had it all cloaked in mystery; that COE told him that if Foreign Funds would recommend releasing it they would do it, but that such a recommendation hadn't been made and therefore they would have to wait until HARRY (WHITE) gets back. PRICHARD said he noticed that ED FOLEY had called them on it too, and PRICHARD said he could see that CORCORAN didn't "let any grass grow under your feet." PRICHARD said he would call HARRY on it this morning. CORCORAN says he has to get some action on it and that he learned from (JAMES) CLEMENTS' office that the guys who actually held the examination recommended releasing it but the intermediate guys recommended holding it just as a matter of policy. CORCORAN says he can't hold the Chinese thing for PEPPER forever; that he has to get this guy (KIEHN) poured out this week. They then discuss the situation in China and what Russia did to Yenan, and both agreed that they knew Russia would do it. CORCORAN said he discussed it in a long talk with BEN COHEN over the weekend. 10:07 AM CORCORAN to Secretary (JAMES) FORRESTAL (Navy Department) at NA 1279 stating that he would like to see FORRESTAL for five minutes before FORRESTAL talks to (T. V. SOONG. FORRESTAL told him to come on over now. O.K. 11:00 AM TIM MOONEY to CORCORAN. They mention the tax difficulties of GEORGE HURLEY in Narragansett, Rhode Island, previously referred to. MOONEY indicates that he will get in touch with the Special Agent in Charge of MR. EPP and ask him to postpone his investigation until after Labor Day. This individual should agree to do so if CORCORAN will cooperate 100% in the case. CORCORAN tells MOONEY that amended returns should be filed by HURLEY and that by all means they should not fudge on this amended return. 11:25 AM JOHN McCLINTOCK (Secretary of State's Office) to CORCORAN. The following is their conversation: C - Sorry, JOHNNY, I couldn't do it. M - I didn't think that anything was going to happen except what did happen. I think you had pretty much the same idea. C - Yeah. M - I resigned this morning with a nice little note to (JAMES) BYRNES and what I would like to do is to go up Thursday to Connecticut and spend about a week with the family. C - Well, let mé see you before you go there. I mean--as I told you, I am having my Chinese revolution troubles but I will be straightened out by tomorrow afternoon so maybe we can get together. M - Yeah. I am pretty rushed trying to get NELSON (ROCKEFELLER ?) cleaned up so he can get the hell out of here today, which I think he should.
