Senator SMATHERS to CORCORAN (Continued):
S - I thought you were going to tell me to go over there and try to
get $10,000 out of them now--five for you and five for me--
C - Well, fellow, I think you ought to do better than that.
S - And another ten next year--
C - I think you ought to do better than that. If it comes down to cash,
then I think out of a thing like this you ought to have $50,000, if
it's cash. Now if it's business, and you know whether, under the
circumstances--
S - No, I don't believe--that's so long and so complicated that--
C - All right, then. You charge $50,000 and a third of the business.
S - All right.
C - All right. Now, I've given you a thought and you trade it any way
you want to. But that's what I'd ask them for.
S - Well, that's why I called you. They're coming to see me tomorrow.
C - That's right. I'd want $5,000 to go down to Washington; I'd want
$50,000 to see them through; and for whatever it's worth, a third
of that sugar business.
10:53 AM
GEORGE FOLKES (phonetic) to CORCORAN. FOLKES said that the papers have
gone to the Bureau of Personnel; that PAT HODGSON (phonetic), General
Counsel, called MATT CORREA (Navy Department) and told him that a little
help from topside wouldn't hurt. TOM said he would kick it.
11:03 AM
CORCORAN to ICKES' secretary. He will be at the Secretary's office at
1 o'clock to have lunch with the Secretary. CORCORAN then spoke to
ABE FORTAS and ABE said he thought a talk to (Senator) MAGNUSON and
(Senator) TOM STEWART would help. CORCORAN said the thing that is
holding it up is that there is a "terrific row about (Judge) HASTIE
(Negro Judge in Puerto Rico) again and the CIO is going in full tilt
on him and it's complicated the situation all over hell.' CORCORAN
said he would see ABE when he comes over to have lunch with ICKES
and will explain it to him because, "I know the whole situation."
11:30 AM
CORCORAN to BEN COHEN, State Department, 2795.
T - BEN, can I see you for five minutes tomorrow at your apartment?
B - What?
T - Can I see you down in your apartment tomorrow morning before you go?
B - Well, I won't be leaving here until Monday--Sunday night at the
earliest--I haven't decided yet. I might be going up Sunday night.
T - Well, I cleared somebody through DONALD's (RUSSELL ? ) help. The
thing I told you I was going to try to clear. I cleared it upstairs.
B - What was that?
T - About HOWIE (CORCORAN). I merely want to show you. the letter we
agreed on. What time do you get down in the morning?
B - I usually leave somewhere between 8:45 and 9:15.
T - All right. I'll get down there at 8:30.
B - You sure that's no trouble.
T - It's trouble, but I'll do it. O.K. All right, sir.
B - I mean--
T - No, I'll get down there. Don't worry. It's no problem for me. I'm
just kidding you.
