BILL YOUNGMAN to WHITEY WILLAUER at F.E.A., Extension 2872. They
discuss the situation in Shanghai where the British have charge of
the British property but where the Japs are looting American property.
YOUNGMAN asked WHITEY to "look into" the matter with JOHN CARTER
VINCENT (State Department). YOUNGMAN got his information from
Mr. MINOR--a General Electric employee. WHITEY said he would do so
saying he heard about the matter and the situation is serious.
5:05 PM
CORCORAN to BARRETT PRETTYMAN telling him it is all set. The other two
are BENNETT CLARK and MILLER--these are the judges. MILLER is one of
the smartest men in the country.
8:45 PM
CORCORAN to DR. SOONG that (LEO) CROWLEY told him that (FRED) VINSON
wants to postpone the meeting for a day while he thinks it over.
CORCORAN will work on it and let DR. SOONG know.
9:30 PM
CORCORAN to MR. (IRVING ?) BRANT as follows:
TC - This is TOM CORCORAN, did you call me?
IB - No, I didn't.
TC - All right, excuse me, I have a record here that you had.
IB - Do you know anything--new.
TC - I know PATTERSON is going to be the Supreme Court Judge, and I
know that they've picked the Circuit Court Judge and they've picked
the District Court Judge here, I just know the fact that the slates
all fixed and that PATTERSON is going to be the Supreme Court one.
IB - You're sure of that?
TC - Quite.
I understand SHERMAN MINTON thinks he's going to get it, but he ain't;
and SHERMAN was offered the War Department job which he turned down,
which he shouldn't have turned down.
IB - Well, why are you so sure PATTERSON will get it?
TC - I was told so yesterday morning. Have you any information to the
contrary.
IB - No, no, I. wouldn't say that.
TC - I was told he was sort of offered his choice; to go up as Secretary
of War or to take this other job, they sort of hoped, in a certain
way that he'd take the Secretary of War so he'd take the brunt of
this investigation that is coming, and that he chose to go in the
Supreme Court. Now this comes from Way inside, but I may be just
plain plumb wrong.
IB - Well, I formed a pretty definite impression that TRUMAN was waiting
for some time before making a decision.
TC - Well, that's what HUGO (BLACK ?) thinks, and I understood TRUMAN
wants -- and was talked into this PATTERSON situation.
IB
- Well, I don't know there has been some things that sounded lawfully
straight on it
that
TC - --that he was going to wait?
IB - No, I mean some of these other reports don't jibe with some of the
comments made to me. I know that on PATTERSON, that, that, uh, well,
I made the comment to TRUMAN that FELIX (FRANKFURTER) was for him,
and he said no, FELIX is for somebody else; and I said well FELIX
always has more than one candidate.
