9:45 AM
BILL YOUNGMAN to QUINN SHAUGHNESSY. YOUNGMAN wants to get his brother-in-
law out of the Navy. QUINN told him to get all the papers together and
send them to CORREA but not SWOPE (phonetic).
9:50 AM
BILL YOUNGMAN to Major CORREA that his brother-in-law wants to get out of
the Navy and has the points. YOUNGMAN wants CORREA to talk to him. CORREA
said that he would talk to the boy. O.K.
11:20 AM
WORTH CLARK for MATTHEW CONNELLY. He is busy with the President at the
moment.
12:30 PM
CORCORAN to BILL YOUNGMAN who says there is no meeting of the Export-Import
bunch today and BEY wants to send a wire to T. V. SOONG. YOUNGMAN says,
"I will drop over and see 'him'. CORCORAN agrees and says, "He will not
be in until 2:15." YOUNGMAN says, "I do not want to crowd him. The other
guy has been waiting around and wants to go home if there is nothing to
do. I want to talk to him about starting some talks with the Export-Import
people about terms but 'he' may not have anyone in the present organization.
CORCORAN says, "I talked to a friend, HIGH COX who has a friend who wants
to tie up with the GARNET organization of law offices in Washington and
Fairfax, Virginia, and he wants to be sure he gets in the Washington office
and not the Virginia office as a partner. CORCORAN asks YOUNGMAN to call
BARRETT PRETTYMAN about it and advise COX. Agreed.
2:05 PM
WORTH CLARK to EDDIE at Senate Interstate Committee office. He then
transfers to 197 to BERT (WHEELER). WORTH inquired if WHEELER thought
that everything was all right with EDWARD (WHEELER) at Navy. BERT
thinks so. CLARK wonders who the guy is who gave the information to
the Press, and said that they were going to find out who, it was. WORTH
said that TOM CORCORAN had talked to FORRESTAL about it. WHEELER said
that someone in the Personnel Division made the tip-off. WHEELER also
added that maybe someone should talk to the newspaperman. WORTH said
that JOHN SULLIVAN would go in quick (as Secretary of the Navy). Both
said that they hated to see FORRESTAL go out. WHEELER said that he had
written "that fellow" a letter which was answered. He told WHEELER that
he had no intention of making a change, that "if the old curmudgeon
(ICKES) will be half way decent, I'll be glad to keep him.' WORTH said
that he would get out anyway--about the first of the year. WHEELER said
that he would. talk to his "guinea" again. CLARK said that he (ICKES ?)
would quit with his arm around WORTH. WHEELER said that everything was
all right out West but that the C.I.O. crowd out there were still after
him.
2:10 PM
WORTH CLARK to ABE FORTAS (Interior Department) CLARK said that CORCORAN
told him that he (CORCORAN) talked to FORTAS yesterday, and told him
about talking to STANLEY KENNEDY. CLARK asked FORTAS to give KENNEDY
15 minutes tomorrow morning. O.K. at 11:00 A.M. CLARK said that KENNEDY
is President of Hawaiian Air Lines and Inter-Island Steamship Company.
