Washington, D. C. CO SUMMARY September 23, 1945 No pertinent activity on this date: September 24, 1945 8:53 AM TOM CORCORAN to JIM FORRESTAL. CORCORAN said that he told me that he was waiting for a letter from JIM MARKHAM (Alien Property Custodian, Department of Justice). FORRESTAL said that O'CONNELL called him in New York Thursday and said the Secretary wouldn't do it unless FORRESTAL okayed it. FORRESTAL said that he had investigated it and it sounded like it was all right, and that he suggested that the Treasury do it. FORRESTAL said that he had his man call up and as far as he knew that it worked out all right--that his man worked out the terms with O'CONNELL. FORRESTAL will check on it this morning. CORCORAN said that JOSH (LEE) was with him. CORCORAN said that he would come over this morning and work it out with FORRESTAL. CORCORAN said that FRED (VINSON) told him that he would look at FORRESTAL's letter this morning. FORRESTAL said that FRED had been ducking it all the time. (Probably KIEHN matter). 9:45 AM CORCORAN to BAILEY in Senator GUFFEY's office telling him "we have a better chance than you and I dreamed of. The White House will send another letter. The fellow from New York and Michigan will go along." CORCORAN asked if BAILEY had seen JIM CLEMENTS (Senator PEPPER's secretary) yet. CORCORAN will work out mechanics of their next move with CLEMENTS. (Probably refers to petition for rehearing re certain new air routes now assigned to Eastern and Delta Airlines--CORCORAN trying to get one for P.C.A.) 10:10 AM TOM CORCORAN to D. WORTH CLARK. TOM said, "I took care of that and it was all understood. TOM said that KENNEDY was told that CRAVENS did not want CLARK around there. TOM has relayed the information to OZ (phonetic). TOM said that he had some interesting talks yesterday. (He was at the Jefferson Island get-together). One was with "your" big friend. TOM told CLARK to move on that BENNETT thing because SAWYER, per DREW PEARSON, may be the next Senator. BENNETT is to be married in October. CLARK will see BROWNELL about the matter. 10:20 AM Mr. DOYLE in COHEN'S office to CORCORAN saying that BEN COHEN will be back Wednesday. A cable might reach him. DOYLE said that they had no direct news of BEN but that such conclusions were drawn from information about movements of the Secretary (JAMES F. BYRNES). 11:08 AM CORCORAN to ABE FORTAS at Interior saying he had hoped to see him at Jefferson Island. ABE was off his feed and didn't go. TOM said that he saw WHEELER and HILL yesterday and "I'm to see BOB (LA FOLLETTE) today. TOM said, "They are ready to go to bat for you in this. (Tidelands business voted down by the House last week--now to come before the Senate). ABE said he would work on it. TOM asked if BILL were back. ABE replied that he had not.
