10:35 AM
TOM CORCORAN to BILL BAILEY in the office of Senator GUFFEY. TOM said,
"BILL, that was a swell letter you wrote. What's the chances of getting
Mr. V to do the same thing." BILL said that he was going to give Mr. V
a copy of the letter to take with him on the floor. TOM said that if they
could get a Republican it would help them very much. (Mr. V evidently
refers to Senator VANDENBERG).
10:45 AM
TOM CORCORAN to EDWARD PRICHARD at Treasury.
TC - PRICH, on that subject we were talking about last night--some shifts
that might go around here--if STU (SYMINGTON) was shifted to some-
thing else, the right man to put in the place he would leave would be
this fellow CLARENCE AVILSON (phonetic) who was head of this new
business committee of THURMAN ARNOLD; but who also was the guy for
NED BURLING--did a hell of a lot of operating in that Surplus after
the last war and--who's a little business. He and BURLING fell out.
EP - I know him. You had him on TNEC. He's one of your puppets. Well,
I'm for him.
TC - Well, I mean, he knows that Surplus game. That's how he made his
and NED's fortune after the last war.
10:51 AM
BOB HINCKLEY to TOM CORCORAN. HINCKLEY did not buy the stock. TOM said,
"That name for ED has been recommended as president of that bank and he's
recommending you as Assistant to the Secretary." TOM added that VINSON
had gone to the President with both of the names.
11:32 PM
TOM CORCORAN to FRANK at R.F.C. TOM said that he is interested in what
will happen to carbon black plants--particularly Continental, Panhandle
and D.P.C. plants. TOM wants to know who to see in order to get a ,better
trade with D.P.C. FRANK said that JERRY HESTER, Extension 1233, would
handle it. TOM told JERRY that he wanted to talk about dropping the
rentals on. these plants. TOM said that both firms that he represents,
want to work with O.P.A. under the new setup but now with the pool
dropping out will make it exhorbitant. TOM said that Mr. WISHNICK,
owner of one plant, wants an appointment with HESTER. O.K. They'll
meet at 12:30 today at Room 965 of the Lafayette.
11:37 AM
D. WORTH CLARK to TOM CORCORAN asking if TOM got the "candidate advisor."
No. CLARK is having lunch with PAYNE at the Statler today and wants
this information beforehand. CLARK said that in the afternoon tomorrow
he wants CLARK, CORCORAN, SMATHERS and MOONEY to meet. O.K.
8:45 PM
TOM CORCORAN to LEO CROWLEY at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.
CORCORAN said that re a third person he said "it is the most disastrous
situation he could conceive of if it didn't get straightened out; next
to the fellow who is coming back tomorrow (BEN COHEN) and even in excess
of him, you are the only fellow who could help them down there. He had
doubts that the settlements could be gotten thru even with all that help.
Said with you gone it would be disastrous and I'm telling you that it is
not going to happen. CORCORAN said he told him that he said he should
see to it that nothing happens until the fellow coming back gets back and
let him try to handle it, also get an understanding from the other fellow
