BEHAN said she believed that CORCORAN was having breakfast with Speaker RAYBURN. She stated, further, that a MISS LOPEZ (phonetic) may be in to see CORCORAN but that the latter does not want to see her because she wants to borrow $300 from him and the latter feels he can't loan the money to her "because she's single and my wife would divorce me if she found out." CORCORAN told BEHAN to have lunch with LOPEZ today and explain that CORCORAN can't lend LOPEZ the money. BEHAN will have lunch with her at 1:15 P.M. today. 10:50 AM CORCORAN at BARRETT PRETTYMAN's office to MISS DE FALCO telling her to tell MR. FOLEY (who is in CORCORAN's office waiting for the latter) and CLARK that he is now with PRETTYMAN and cannot come to his own office for a few minutes. 11:25 AM CORCORAN to JIM CLEMENTS at Senator PEPPER's office. CLEMENTS said that SULLIVAN, a friend of TOM's, was recommended for the Post Office Department yesterday. Also CLEMENTS asked if CORCORAN had spoken to HUGH COX. Answer: No, but he'll do it right after lunch today. CLEMENTS will then see HUGH tomorrow. CLEMENTS said that GEORGE SMATHERS wants to meet Speaker RAYBURN while GEORGE is in town today and tomorrow. CORCORAN said: "I had breakfast with him this morning." GEORGE is now with TOM CLARK, in the Department of Justice, said JIM. CORCORAN will arrange for SMATHERS to meet RAYBURN and will advise JIM. 11:26 AM BILL BAILEY to CORCORAN. BILL said: "TOM, the boss (Senator) GUFFEY showed that fellow (VANDENBERG) a copy of our letter and he said he first wanted to talk to his people back in Michigan and that if they agreed he'd be glad to write a similar letter. So that's where it stands. He did want to know this: He says, 'Now where the hell does PEPPER stand-who's he for?' Well, we said, he's, of course, for TCA and there's no doubt about that." TOM said there was no doubt about that. BILL said, 'My Senator's' letter went in (on the CAA matter). 11:27 AM CORCORAN to JIM CLEMENTS at Senator PEPPER's Office. CORCORAN said that GUFFEY talked to VANDENBERG and the latter will go through if his Michigan people agree. CORCORAN said, "His people in Michigan are CHARLIE's (MURCHISON) people--so he'll go through.' CORCORAN asked CLEMENTS if he had an answer from WELCH (POGUE). CLEMENTS said he didn't know. CORCORAN asked CLEMENTS to be sure a copy of the letter sent to WELCH goes to "CLAUDE's former colleague on the same outfit." 11:40 AM CORCORAN to D. WORTH CLARK, who said that BENNETT CLARK had to see TRUMAN this morning and that's why he didn't come up. CORCORAN asked CLARK to keep "BENNETT here until 12:15 when I'll be back." CLARK agreed.
