Washington, D. C.
CO SUMMARY
September 28, 1945
3:50 PM
TOM CORCORAN to EDDIE HIGGINS (Senator GREEN's office). He said
that "we won the appeal" in W.P.B. HIGGINS said he had an argument
with ROSE. CORCORAN asked EDDIE what he thinks of the McGRATH
situation. HIGGINS said it is good for "us" and we were in it from
the beginning all the way. The story is, off the record, it is a
build-up for the nomination for Senator.
TC - You mean take GARY on?
EH - Absolutely, we believe that PETER won't be a candidate. All right,
I think labor will make it tough that he won't, the tougher they
make it the better it is. But Labor is going to make it tough for
PETER because of that SMITH-CONNALLY BILL and other things and
he won't be in there and then HOWARD steps in
3:55 PM
TOM CORCORAN to EDDIE HIGGINS. CORCORAN apologized for having to hang
up. HIGGINS said that "we" don't think PETER will be a candidate because
labor will make it so tough for him and then HOWARD (phonetic) is right
there. CORCORAN asked who is it moving up. HIGGINS said he is a little
Italian, JOHNNIE PASTORI, Lieutenant Governor. CORCORAN said you can
trust him. HIGGINS said when we put him in there we had an understanding.
CORCORAN said he hoped "they" had enough courage to take GARY out.
HIGGINS said "that is our game," but if labor will knock him out that
will make it easier on election day and if we have to go fight them that
is something different. HIGGINS said if it came down to (garbled)
wanted to remain solicitor, then DENNY ROBERTS, the Mayor of Providence,
will go in the convention against GARY and beat him because ROBERTS is
very popular. CORCORAN told HIGGINS he is very smart.
5:40 PM
TOM CORCORAN to JOHN SONNETT. CORCORAN said that on the piece of paper
that he talked to him about yesterday, the one which the committee was
interested in. Yes. CORCORAN said he was getting a guy who is not his
own (SONNETT's) calibre. This is not his CORCORAN's) sale anyway, but
it is important to do it as the orders will come as he assumes they are
going to come; and he will call SONNETT and SONNETT will have to bluff
it along. O.K. SONNETT asked if TOM saw the new Judge today. CORCORAN
couldn't understand then said that the Judge is going on Monday, will see
him in the morning and also will have tea with him this afternoon.
SONNETT said he didn't think it was necessary as this has been taken
care of. CORCORAN said he would see the Judge anyway before he leaves.
