TOM CORCORAN to A. T. HOBSON (Continued) :
but that no one would have him because he is a "plug." CORCORAN said
he got a place for him in the Justice Department, which they agreed is
the appropriate place for him. CORCORAN asked HOBSON if he should ask
CHICK FISHER about something but HOBSON said he will ask FISHER himself.
10:12 AM
DREW PEARSON told TOM CORCORAN that he will be at CORCORAN's office at
12:30.
11:05 AM
CORCORAN told ABE FORTAS (Interior Department) that BURT WHEELER thinks
"that" will clinch it. FORTAS said he sent the cable but he doesn't
think "he" (ICKES ?) got it but that he had left and gone to the
Continent. CORCORAN said all WHEELER wants is to get by next Monday.
FORTAS said he thinks everything is in good shape and that he has told
everybody.
11:20 AM
TOM CORCORAN told WORTH CLARK that BILL said he listened to the radio
this morning and they were quoting the London papers on CROWLEY's going
and London was more jubilant than it had been since VE-day, that it had
gotten rid of its great enemy.
WC - What can be done now, TOM?
TC - Well, all that is important is that he be allowed to have a trading
position, uh, I think, what I'd like to do is get that out on
FULTON (LEWIS) uh--the English think they have gotten rid of their
great enemy, we have got to build him up into that kind of a figure.
Uh--the guy that was holding, see-get it?
WC - Yeah.
TC - Now, what we ought to do, is that they could pick up this stuff
that's been quoted from London, what the London papers are saying
and
WC - You say that was on the radio?
TC - BILL told me about NBC. Just the fact that London reacts that way
will. help LEO, see.
WC - Uh, huh.
TC - Don't criticize him, help him on it by saying, "London has gone
wild with joy, he was a tough boy."
WC - Well, I am going to have trouble on that. FULTON feels that way
but both FULTON and BILL, as I told you, BILL tipped me off 3
weeks ago.
TC - That was the build-up they were playing on LEO to get him out but
it was the English who tripped him out of the thing.
WC - That may be TOM, but what I am telling you is the frame of mind of
FULTON and BILL. They like LEO very much, they are very friendly.
You remember the first time when I delivered for LEO after they
were in it. Of course, LEO never did deliver for JOHNNY DANNAHER
(phonetic). Now, that's all right; LEO is my friend, he is your
friend. We have got to do everything we can for him. The point
is those things--now then FULTON laid off. About 2 or 3 weeks ago
BILL tipped me off, he said: "WORTH, FULTON may be in a hole on
this and may have to go into the whole administration set-up of
LEO's again." I told BILL that I had one promise out of FULTON
