CO SUMMARY Washington, D. C. October 8, 1945 9:32 AM TOM CORCORAN told BILL BAILEY (Senator GUFFEY's office) that the new member of the Board will be BART CRUM, a Wilkie man from California. He's a Republican. BILL knows nothing about VANDENBERG's stand yet. 9:50 AM MR. HINCKLEY told TOM CORCORAN he had a fine time at the CORCORAN party. He complimented CORCORAN on his family. CORCORAN said it was too bad the Justice (BLACK) monopolized BEN COHEN and that WHITEY (WILLAUER) took over the conversation. CORCORAN said he would contact HINCKLEY in a few minutes as he was very busy right now. 10:55 AM D. WORTH CLARK to TOM CORCORAN: TC - I just wanted to tell you I got a proxy here this morning from American Power and Light for that meeting on October 22nd. I suppose our boys are watching that meeting, are they? WC - Well, yes. I'm sure they are. I tried-- TC - Did they see that article that I pointed out to you? WC - Yes. Well BOZELL (phonetic) and JACOBS has a clipping service that they're using on it, and they got it, I tried to get through that night, but I couldn't get a line at all. And they cancelled all phone calls out at midnight on me. I may call them today. TC - I think you ought to--but I was very interested when I was up in FRANK WOOD's office the other day. FRANK WOOD is HAWKINS DELAFIELD (phonetic) who are the great competitors of THOMPSON, WOOD, and HOFFMAN on municipal bonds. He said to me, "Do you know anyway that you can get this business, because a bond opinion is paid for in. proportion to the size of the issue in these municipal bond lawyer's houses'. And he pulled out a list of businesses: Washington Power and Light, Puget Sound Power and Light, Savannah--Savannah was in there. There was a whole list of stuff that GUY MEYER is trying to do, and he wondered if I could get the business into HAWKINS DELAFIELD. I laughed my head off. But that money--that thing is so big that it's going to come. You've got to get into it now though. These fellows have got to move. Where did you finally end up with ABE GLASSMAN? He had nothing but this other syndicate, huh? WC - I don't know. The damn fellow--his wife was there--and I just thought that I'd talk him out for an hour and a half. I found out quite a little bit about the game. He didn't find out a damn thing. And he wanted to go and organize a syndicate. And he wanted me to get hold of BILL DOLPH, he's heard that BILL is quite an operator. And I said, "Well I'll arrange for you to meet him sometime. He said, "Hell, he can make some money. We've got a day-time frequency in Chicago, and a day-time frequency in Detroit, and it only cost us $100,000." And he said, "I'd like to go in on it" with the intimation to--that we put in our own money, see? And he wanted BILL DOLPH and so forth. And so I just passed that off. We ended up precisely nowhere. I think I'll send in this partnership agreement on this other thing--take that little 121% over; and let the other thing just lay there. And he's a mess, TOM. Now, I don't know, the only thing is--we want to keep playing along there on account of HINCKLEY. I don't think we'll ever make a nickel out of him. He's just a damn nuisance.
