12:30 PM Senator GUFFEY to TOM CORCORAN (continued) JG - And I don't want anything - - TC - And there have been two Pennsylvanians taken out of that Department. JG - I'm not going to ask for it. If the President puts this one up, I'm not going to be a candidate this time. TC - Well, I mean, listen, I have no communication with the President, JOE. I ain't - JG - I'm merely telling you this. TC - I ain't in the situation I used to be (facetiously). I can't act as a conduit. It was only that I got an idea and I passed it on to BILL this morning. JG - I'd like to have the job, but I don't want the job under the cir- cumstances, because I've got to approve of this damned crooked McGRANERY--he is a--he's not honest, he's not straight. He deceived the Cardinal. Do you get me? I get that from MIKE CLOSKEY (phonetic) (or MacCLOSKEY). TC - Mmmm. JG - Now, I'm going to make a speech on the floor, if it comes up here that will burn him, and he will never have standing again. TC - Well, that's your judgment. JG - I know that's my judgment too, I don't give a damn whether I quit tomorrow or not. TC - All I was thinking about--I mean, JOE--in the event that something was to be traded for it, I didn't know whether anybody had thought of the possibility of trading out what he had for it, which, I know from long experience, is the best job in town. JG - TOM, on the sixth of November I will have finished my 50 years in politics. I started in 19-- TC - Damn few ever survived. JOE, damn few ever survived that many. JG - Well, I've done that. And I've kept-I've succeeded for two reasons. I've never made a promise that I didn't honestly try to keep, and I've never sold anybody down the river on the trade of a loss. I couldn't do it - - TC - Well, JOE, listen - - JG - That's what that would mean here. TC - JOE, I don't know what this is all about, and I'm not in a position to be able to help. JG - I know, but I'll tell you one of these days. TC - But all I'm saying to you is please keep my confidence as to where - - JG - Oh, I'll do - - TC - I learned about this Cardinal thing. Keep my confidence - - JG - I'll do that certainly. I'll do that - TC - About that, and I was simply--just simply trying this morning - - JG - I appreciate it very much. TC - I got an idea and I threw it out to BILL. That's all. JG - Thank you very much indeed. TC - O.K., JOE. JG - Thank you, TOM. Hello? TC - Yeah. JG - We got the double cross over there, didn't we? (This probably refers to WELCH POGUE getting JOSH LEE to change his vote on a rehearing be- fore the C.A.B. in which CORCORAN was interested in P.C.A., as well as GUFFEY.)
