Washington, D. C. October 24, 1945 CO SUMMARY 3:42 PM ROBERT BERGER to TOM CORCORAN. BERGER said, "TOM, if JIM's (McGRANERY) appointment could be expedited it would give a longer pull for the wounds to heal. I mean, in the face of next month's elections locally." CORCORAN said he'd see what he could do about it and asked "has anybody up there got sense enough to suggest that? Has JIM CLARK got sense enough?" BOB said JIM could not "step out of line with FRANK MEYERS and JOE (GUFFEY). I don't think he's in that position. But if it can before November, there's one thing that's got me worried and that is DAVE LAWRENCE election out in Pittsburgh because he's not a candidate on the Democratic ticket. He's the chairman of the whole damned state. One blow there, and they're gonna pour in plenty of dough." CORCORAN said, "All right." 3:46 PM WORTH CLARK to TOM CORCORAN. CLARK said, "That matter I talked to you about this morning about this case in New York. Would it be better for me to try or would you have a way of finding out what attorney was assigned to that, etc.? I'm talking about the movie thing. (NICK SCHENCK case) CORCORAN said he knew how to find out. CLARK said it was awfully important "just as a book. Don't know as anybody'd ever want to use it, but that goes pretty deep you know. And it just blends so beautifully with what you originally told me if you recall when you asked me to call that Senator (WHERRY, Judiciary Committee?) you know, in connection with his (TOM CLARK's) confirmation--at night? Remember? And I'm just gettin' a little mad at some of these guys and SO I just thought I'd go to work and see what could be done. Because if they threw' that thing I want to know it." CORCORAN said O.K. 3:50 PM TOM CORCORAN asked Secretary ICKES if he could see him about 5 PM today. O.K. CORCORAN will be over. 4:47 PM TOM CORCORAN unable to reach WORTH CLARK at his office, NAtional 4882. He reached him at home, EMerson 2244, and the following conversation took place: TC - WORTH, would you find out from (Senator) WHEELER if Admiral CARTER ever called him? WC - CARTER? He saw CARTER. TC - Well, but that was two weeks ago, and CARTER was supposed to call him back. I'm checking to see if CARTER called him back before I go to do some more work on ED (WHEELER) before I go away. WC - O.K. You leaving tonight? TC - I'm going at 3:40 in the morning unless I get something better. I'll get something better. In the meanwhile, will you take care of SMATHERS when he blows in tonight and make sure he reports to you early in the morning? WC - Well, I'll have a little difficulty taking care of him tonight. TC - I mean, just call in so he doesn't get away. You know, SMATHERS is always late for everything and that appointment is for 10 something in the morning.
