CORCORAN said, \"He (LEO) thought that with a\nlittle work he could get him and wanted to pass that suggestion on to\nyou.\" RUSSELL said he \"would get the two along.\" (re Export-Import Bank)\n12:41 PM\nTOM CORCORAN to JOHN SONNETT at Justice Department. CORCORAN said, \"I'm\njust telling you this to keep you up to date. Not to urge you to do any-\nthing. Now, they're gonna handle that Senator's matter (BURT WHEELER's\nson, ED) very foolishly. They had decided on Monday to forget about it\nand just extend the time indefinitely. Then this PEARSON article came\nout two days ago. Now they've decided to call him back for three days a\nweek. It means, now, that every guy that they can find anything to do\nin Washington now will apply now to be three days on and three days off.\nThat is not smart.\" JOHN said O.K.\n12:50 PM\nTOM CORCORAN to ED WHEELER. The following conversation took place:\nTC - Hello, ED.\nEW - Yes.\nTC - ED WHEELER?\nEW - Yes, TOM.\nTC - Now I know what happened, and I'm still trying to get JIM (FORRESTAL),\nand I ought to get him right after lunch.\nEW - Oh, swell.\nTC - What happened was--they decided this. JIM decided this. I don't\nknow whether your father told you everything that happened.\nEW - No.\nTC - JIM and your father talked at the beginning of the week and, just\nas I told you, JIM had decided to push this thing over. Then along\ncame this PEARSON article. Now CARTER (Admiral CARTER) came down\nto see your father yesterday afternoon, and said in view of the\nPEARSON article what he thought they'd better do is to have you do\nit, and leave you there three days a week and off three days a week.\nThat's bum too. And from the Navy's point of view, it's positively\ninsane.\nEW - Well, they couldn't do it.\nTC - Because every fellow over there will then think why the hell can't\nhe spend three days on and three days off. But that was the\nAdmiral's wobbling and DENFIELD's (phonetic) wobbling to that\narticle which, of course, was just planted to catch you. Now those\narticles are always written three days in advance. So what happened\nis, FORRESTAL decided this thing on Monday. The word was leaked out\nto DREW and DREW stocked it for Wednesday or Thursday. Now the\nAdmirals are having the creeps again. I wish to God that this wasn't\nNavy Day week. But I will be slugging the same this afternoon. All\nright.\nEW - Well, thanks a thousand times, TOM. I certainly appreciate it.
