ERNIE CUNEO to TOM CORCORAN (continued)
TC - I don't know. Of course, that Brazilian situation turned out
pretty badly.
EC - What is it anyhow?
TC - Well - -
EC - What's inside?
TC - What's inside?
EC - Yeah.
TC - Just the ins and the outs inside, that's all there is. But this
guy (VARGAS?) at least--there isn't anybody to succeed him, that's
the trouble--and this guy was our friend, and ADOLF sort of pulled
the trigger.
EC - On him?
TC - Yeah.
EC - Oh. ADOLF against VARGAS.
TC
-
ADOLF did it. ADOLF made a demand on him at a private dinner and
then released the speech.
EC - What did he do? Said there'd be an election, huh?
TC - Yes. Demanded. While they were trying to work the damned situation
out, ADOLF, just to make sure that SPRUILLE BRADEN didn't get more
headlines than he did, just pulled the trigger on the guy. Now,
maybe it was the right thing to do, but I don't think it was inter-
stitially the right thing to do.
EC - That's more nerve than I ever knew ADOLF to have.
TC - Well, he did. Now, it's all right for the long pull. All this
business, boy, of being for democracy is all right if you are
willing to follow it up, but if you are not willing to follow it
up you ought to leave a situation alone.
EC - Well, we are in one son-of-a-bitch of a mess all over, I'll tell
you that.
CORCORAN then asked CUNEO when he was going to get married, and CUNEO
said he thought he would have to put it off until spring inasmuch as
his fiancee is studying for the bar exam at this time. They then
discuss the pros and cons of marriage, and both agree that it is a bad
thing to marry a woman who is a lawyer. CORCORAN said that ABE FORTAS'
wife's economic competition is driving ABE crazy. (ABE FORTAS, Under-
Secretary of Interior)
EC - Well, I'll see you next week when I come back.
TC - What net do you think these articles have meant? (Saturday
Evening Post)
EC - Nothing. Incidentally, NOBLE didn't stand up on that.
TC - He punched out, yeah. That was KITTNER (phonetic). He,walked out
again.
EC - Because they said, "Look, do you really want it?" after BERGER
called me, and they said, "No." The net effect of the articles
was nothing--I lean--they are forgotten. DREW (PEARSON) says you
can't even understand them.
