    "ocrText": "IMMEDIATE RELEASE\nIMMEDIATE RELE'SE\nRE'R platForm REM'RKS OF THE\nPRESIDENT AT OR \"FORDSVILLE,\nINDIANA, OCTOBER 12, 1948\nNATIONAL\n11:16 A.M., C.S.T.\nARCHIVES AND\nThank you, thank you very much.\nGovernor, Mr. Chairnan, and Fellow Democrats of\nIndiana: It locks to me as if you are all here.\nI am most happy to be in this wonderful city of\nCrawfordsville this morning. You have some very famous\npeople with whom we are all familiar who come from this\nlovely town - Lew Wallace, Meradith Nicholson. \"Alice\nof Old Vincennes\" -- Thompson, I think, wrote that book.\nHe lived here till he died. It has been my privilege to\nread most of the books that these famous men have written,\nand especially have I been interested in James Whitcomb\nRiley's poetry. I was in his town of Greenfield this morning,\nand I had a grand time there. The people turned out in\nimmense numbers, but nothing like this. This tops them all.\nI have been making trips all over this country. I\nhave been from the West Coast and back again. I have been\nacross the iddle-tlentic States. I have been through the\nMiddle West. Now I am making a tour through Indiana and\nIllinois and Wisconsin and Minnesota. Then I am going to\nwind up by a tour scross the Northern side of the United\nStates and tell everybody what is going on in this country\nand what this campaign means.\nI am trying to have everyone of you understand that\nyour interest is at stake and that this is one of the most\nimportant campaigns that the United States will have in\nseveral generations.\nI feel very strongly on these issues. I feel that they\nare basic to the prosperity and welfare of the American\npeople. I believe that the continuing welfer of our Nation\ndepends on every voter's understanding these issues when\nhe goes to the polls.\nI have told the people what the Democratic Party\nstands for end. what it has done for the people. Because the\nRepublican candidates won't be frank and tell what the\nRepublican Party intends to do to the people I have also\ntalked about the Republican Party and what it stands for and\nwhat it will do to you if it gets E nce. I don't think\nthere is any Republican who could accuse me of pulling punches.\nI am telling fects, and they can't stand facts. They like to\ntalk about unity and give you a little soothing syrup and\nmake you believe that they are all right, but if you will\nstudy the record you will find that they are anything but\nright\nTodey we are in the nidst of the greatest prosperity this\ncountry has ever seen. That rosperity is threatened by run-a-\nway high prices which began when the Republicans, under the\nleadership of men like Senator Teft and Senstor Wherry,\ndestroyed price controls back in 1946. I want to see our\nprosperity continue. I want to see those high prices brought\nunder control so that wages end salaries and farm income will\nmaintain their purchasing power.\nThe prosperity that we have today. has not come by\naccident. It was carefully planned. It is the result of\nDemocratic policies for the last 16 years.\n(OVER)"
