Weather: Scattered low and middle clouds, bases 2,000-3,000 feet. Fore- cast: Similar conditions; visibility unrestricted except in haze and morn- ing fog. 2. Soviet Participation: Negative. 3. Enemy Situation: a. Patrols of the 35th U.S. RCT probed 2,000-3,500 yards to the front of friendly positions without encountering any enemy troops. Six small boats, transporting troops across the Nam River 4 1/2 miles north- east of Uiryong on the afternoon of 23 August, were fired on by 35th U.S. RCT artillery. Small groups were reported withdrawing across the Nam shortly after midnight. The enemy counterattack against elements of the 24th U.S. RCT launched early on 23 August was repulsed, but elements of the 24th U.S. RCT continued to receive sporadic small arms fire throughout the remainder of the day. An enemy force of estimated company strength succeeded in holding well dug-in positions near the crest of Sobuk-San throughout the period against attacks of elements of the 5th U.S. RCT. The enemy is regrouping and reinforcing his troops on the 5th U.S. RCT front. Seventeen PW's captured in the Tongyong area on 23 August were identified as members of the 3d Regiment, 7th North Korean Division. (FECOM) (SECRET) b. No significant enemy activity was reported on the southern portion of the 2d U.S. Infantry Division front during the period. (FECOM) (SECRET) C. A 10-man enemy patrol attempting to cross the Naktong River, about 8 miles northwest of Yongsan, after dark, was annihilated.
