Situation in Brief: a. GROUND (1) The southward movement of an undetermined number of troops and vehicles on roads leading to Chinju indicates an enemy buildup in the southern sector. Aside from a strong enemy night attack on ele- ments of the 24th RCT, there was only minor activity on the front held by the 25th U.S. Infantry Division in the south. (FECOM) (TOP SECRET) (2) The enemy aggressively patrolled along the part of the Naktong line held by the 2d U.S. Infantry and 1st U.S. Cavalry Divisions. (FECOM) (TOP SECRET) (3) In the north, the enemy subjected the 6th ROK Division to heavy pressure, including artillery and tank fire and infantry-tank attacks. Heavy fighting reportedly continues in the sector. (FECOM) (TOP SECRET) (4) On the east coast, where the attacking 3d ROK Division is in contact along the entire front, enemy resistance is increasing. (FECOM) (TOP SECRET) b. NAVY Naval surface forces patrolled the east and west coasts of Korea, executing fire missions as requested, and firing on targets of oppor- tunity. BADOENG STRAIT and SICILY planes continued their effective close support of ground troops, flying 42 sorties. Air and surface reconnaissance was continued in Korean and Formosan waters. (COMNAVFE) (TOP SECRET) C. AIR During 24 August FEAF reports 529 sorties. Intruder attacks on the night of 24-25 August were made against communications and other targets. On 25 August, 32 B-29's attacked the Hungnam chemical plant with 212 tons of bombs. Radar was used and results were unobserved.
