Situation in Brief: GROUND The entire 25th U.S. Infantry Division is holding its original MLR, although the enemy continues harassing the Division's rear area. The enemy is stubbornly resisting a counterattack by the 9th U.S. RCT and elements of the 1st Provisional Marine Brigade in the 2d U.S. Infantry Division sector. However, a counterattack of the 23d U.S. RCT reached the Naktong River, and the 38th U.S. RCT was holding firm. The 7th U.S. Cavalry RCT regained positions which had previously been lost in the 1st U.S. Cavalry Division sector, and the 8th U.S. Cavalry RCT remained under heavy enemy pressure. An enemy attack forced the limited withdrawal of the 11th ROK Regiment in the northern sector, but the remaining units were holding their positions against strong enemy resistance. Enemy locations in the ROK Capitol Divi- sion area remained uncertain, and heavy enemy pressure continued against the 3d ROK Division. The 21st U.S. RCT is engaging the enemy in Angang. (FECOM) (SECRET) NAVY Naval ships executed call fire missions and supplied harassing fire as requested by KMAG. Troop concentrations, artillery and mortar positions, supply dumps, and road junctions in the Pohang and Yongdok areas were hit. Aircraft from PHILIPPINE SEA and VALLEY FORGE flew close support missions for ground troops in the southern sector. (COMNAVFE) (SECRET) AIR On 3 September, FEAF aircraft flew a total of 577 sorties, of which 404 were combat. Marine F4U aircraft flying with FEAF flew 39 sorties, another outstanding effort.
