(maps attached)
I
From 0800/05 (EDT) to 0800/06 (EDT)
From 2200/05 (KT) to 2200/06 (KT)
1. Situation in Brief:
GROUND
In the southern sector, the 25th U.S. Infantry Division continued
to hold positions against diminishing enemy attacks and to wipe out enemy
pockets in rear areas. In the 2d U.S. Infantry Division sector, the enemy
made two counterattacks, which were repulsed. In the 1st U.S. Cavalry
Division sector, the 27th U.K. Infantry Brigade engaged enemy patrols east
of the river. The Division continued to hold the enemy in all its sectors.
In the northern sector, the 1st ROK Division continued its attack to close
the gap westward to the 1st U.S. Cavalry Division. The situation remains
obscure in the ROK Capitol Division sector as the enemy increased its
strength east and west of the Angang-Kyongju corridor. The 21st U.S. RCT
counterattacked north of Kyongju, while the 3d ROK Division had to withdraw
2,000 yards southwest of Pohang. (FECOM) (SECRET)
NAVY
The Korean east coast surface patrol hit troops and other targets
in the Pohang area and shelled shore targets in the vicinity of 40N. Naval
guns provided close support for ground troops from off the Korean south
coast. British planes reconnoitered the west coast and covered and spotted
for the successful bombardment of the Inchon area by British and Common-
wealth ships. The ROK Navy continued its operations off the south and west
coasts. Task Force 77 planes hit targets in northwest Korea. The Navy
patrolled La Perousse Strait and naval ships and planes patrolled Korean
and Formosan waters. (COMNAVFE) (SECRET)
AIR
On 5 September, 304 sorties were flown, including 156 combat.
Weather was the limiting factor in the low rate of Air Force activity. On
6 September, 41 B-29's attacked targets in north Korea, including the mar-
shaling yards at Songjin and the shunting yards north of Pyongyang. Five
B-29's sustained minor damage from flak over Pyongyang. (FEAF) (SECRET)
