Situation in Brief: GROUND In the 25th U.S. Infantry Division sector, enemy small arms and mortar fire was continued against Company Lg 24th U.S. RCT, about 4 miles south of Haman, during the morning and afternoon. Friendly ele- ments, attempting to reduce an enemy pocket in an area about 4 miles south of Masan-ni, estimated to contain at least 300 troops, encountered strong enemy resistance, Activity in the 2d U.S. Infantry Division sector was confined to enemy patrolling along the entire front with sporadic enemy artillery, SP, and mortar fire. In the Taegu area, the 15th ROK Regiment advanced 1,000 yards to the walled city during the morning against light resistance, but the advance was halted due to exposed flanks. ROK elements northeast of Yongchon continued to advance against light enemy resistance. The 17th ROK Regiment continued to advance slowly to the northwest, The 3d ROK Division with the 18th ROK Regiment advanced northward to the river in the Pohang area, which because of its flooded condition was hin- dering crossing attempts. (FECOM) (SECRET) NAVY HELENA, BRUSH, and THOMAS off Pohang executed call-fire missions and patrolled the area. DOYLE and ENDICOTT delivered haras- sing and interdiction fire in support of the 25th U.S. Infantry Division. During the shelling of Wolmi Island in the Inchon area on 13 September, GURKE, COLLETT, and SWENSON were hit by shore fire. The COLLETT received considerable damage. Personnel casualties on the 3 ships were 1 killed and 8 wounded. Heavier ships continued the bombardment of the designated shore targets. PHILIPPINE SEA and VALLEY FORGE aircraft ranged west-central Korea striking land and air transportation facilities, military installations, and other targets in 8 cities with particular attention to Inchon and Wolmi Island. (COMNAVFE) (SECRET) AIR On 13 September, FEAF aircraft flew 240 effective sorties of which 195 were combat. The low figure was due to typhoon weather conditions.
