The President SECRET Washington, D.C. 17 September 1950 1 JOINT DAILY SITREP NO. 82 (maps attached) From 0800/16 (EDT) to 0800/17 (EDT) From 2100/16 (KT) to 2100/17 (KT) 1. Situation in Brief: GROUND a. U.S. X Corps: Resistance by hostile elements in the Inchon area proved ineffectual as the U.S. Marines pushed a rapidly widening perimeter eastward toward Seoul, During 16 September, U.N. forces drove approximately 6 miles north and east of Inchon to firm positions astride the main highway between Inchon and Seoul. Naval air continues its close support of friendly forces, bombing and strafing enemy troops and vehicles, and preventing effective movement of enemy reinforcements. General MacArthur and his staff visited the front line. elements of both the 5th and 7th Marines from 0900 to 1200/17 (KT), and then made a complete tour of Inchon and Wolmi Island. The POW inclosure at Inchon now holds 631 inmates. Wolmi Island preparations were made for an impregnable defense, but all of the positions were not fully manned and equipped prior to the U.N. landing. Enemy troop movement and supply movement from Osan and Suwon northward toward Seoul and Inchon are now under air attack and initial reports on the results are encouraging. A late dispatch reports that the 1st U.S. Marine Division has captured the Kimpo Airfield and advanced to the Han River. The enemy has not yet recovered sufficient equilibrium from the surprise landing to organize more than a sporadic defense. This lack of coordination is leading to the piecemeal destruction of the various enemy increments with only minor losses to the friendly forces. Prisoners now approach 1,000. All schedules are being maintained. (FECOM) (SECRET) b. EUSAK: Eighth Army elements continued to attack boldly subjecting the enemy to heavy pressure applied simultaneously at numerous points along the front, Although bitter resistance held gains in the left and central portions of the 25th U.S. Infantry Division zone to negligible pro- portions, the 35th U.S. RCT drove 1,500 yards to the east bank of the Nam River. Similarly, the 2d U.S. Infantry Division continued its attack with the 38th U.S. RCT seizing high ground overlooking the Naktong River, while other units of the Division made limited advances. Reports indicated that substantial enemy withdrawals across the river are being made from this DECLASSIFIED E.O. 12065, Sec. 3-402 SECRET DOD Directive 5100.30 lune 18, 1979 Rv NAR 2114181
