Situation in Brief: GROUND In the Seoul-Inchon area, the 1st U.S. Marine Division fanned out and occupied positions along the south bank of the Han River northeast of Kimpo Airfield. Repeated enemy counterattacks around the perimeter of Kimpo Airfield were repulsed early on 18 September. ROK Marines advanced north of Inchon to protect the northern flank, while the U.S. 7th Infantry Division moved forward on the southern flank. In south Korea, the 27th and 35th U.S. RCT's made limited gains, but the 24th U.S. RCT of the 25th U.S. Infantry Division was held up by stiff enemy resistance. Elements of the 2d U.S. Infantry Division wiped out enemy strongpoints and expanded a bridgehead over the Naktong to a depth of one mile, The 24th U.S. Infantry Division established a bridgehead across the Naktong south of Waegwan. The 1st U.S. Cavalry Division made limited advances against heavy enemy counterattacks, North of Taegu, ROK Army troops pushed the disorganized enemy northward as much as 8,000 yards. The walled city dominating the area north of Taegu was recaptured, In the Pohang area, elements of the 3d ROK Division were in the outskirts of that port city. (FECOM) (SECRET) NAVY As of 0952/19 (KT) 28,682 personnel, 14,883 (SIC) vehicles and 14,173 tons of cargo had been unloaded at Inchon. Carrier-based planes cleared the way for the advance of ground forces in close support attacks on enemy troops, tanks and defensive positions in the Seoul-Inchon area, Ships of Joint Task Force 7 protected the landings and furnished gunfire support. British and Commonwealth ships guarded the flanks. BRUSH, and later THOMAS, shelled enemy targets in the Pohang area, clearing the way for the advance of the 3d ROK Division. HELENA and THOMAS, with DOYLE close inshore, patrolled near the beached LST at Pugyong, protecting ROK troops aboard against repeated enemy attacks. ENDICOTT continued close support of the 25th U.S. Infantry Division in the southern sector. A total of 270 Naval air sorties were flown during the 24 hours ending 2400/18 (KT).
