In the U.S. X Corps sector, the 1st U.S. Marine Division moved
troops and materiel across the Han River, during the night, in continuance
of the attack on Seoul. The 1st U.S. Marine Regiment repulsed an enemy
counterattack, supported by tanks, 2 miles west of Yongdungpo early on
20 September. In the Eighth Army sector, the enemy from entrenched
positions stubbornly resisted the advance of the 25th U.S. Infantry Division.
In the 2d U.S. Infantry Division zone, the 9th U.S. RCT plunged across the
Naktong, while the 23d and 38th U.S. RCT's expanded their bridgeheads.
The leading elements of the 24th U.S. Infantry Division are now 3 1/2
miles northwest of Waegwan, and 1 mile east of Songju. The 6th ROK
Division restored its positions, after an enemy counterattack resulted in
a slight withdrawal. The 8th ROK Division advanced up to 5 miles. Al-
though the enemy was weakening along the northern front there was no
firm indications of a general withdrawal. (FECOM)(SECRET)
