1. Situation in Brief:
GROUND
In the U.S. X Corps sector, armored cars and tanks of the 7th
Infantry Division Reconnaissance Company entered Suwon on the evening
of 21 September, and by noon on 22 September the town was secured. In
the Eighth Army sector, the south flank of the 25th U.S. Infantry Division
met stiff opposition, while the center and right RCT's gained up to 8,000
yards against little or no opposition. In the 2d U.S. Infantry area, heavy
enemy small arms, artillery, and mortar fire during the night of 21-22
September caused the advanced elements of the 9th U.S. RCT to withdraw
from west of the Naktong River to more advantageous positions on the
east bank. An enemy counterattack of battalion size early on 22 September
caused elements of the 23d U.S. RCT to lose some commanding terrain
which was regained before noon by a counterattack. The 38th U.S. RCT
bridgehead was expanded on 22 September in the face of harassing enemy
sniper fire. The 25th U.S. Infantry Division continued its westward ad-
vance against light scattered resistance to gain positions 9 miles least of
Chinju. In the 1st U.S. Cavalry Division zone little resistance has been
encountered, The 7th U.S. Cavalry RCT advanced 12,000 yards on 22
September without enemy contact. The walled city north of Taegu has
been cleared. After abeing subjected to an artillery shelling at Angang
on the night of 21 September, the ROK Capitol Division attacked north at
daylight gaining 3,000 yards against light enemy resistance. (FECOM)

NAVY
Marine aircraft from BADOENG STRAIT and SICILY furnished
close support for troops in Inchon-Seoul area. Planes from VALLEY
FORGE, BOXER, and PHILIPPINE SEA continued to disrupt enemy trans-
portation in the west-central part of Korea, and to interdict the movement
of reinforcements to the Seoul area. Aircraft from TRIUMPH ranged
along the west coast seeking out enemy shipping. Naval aircraft flew
305 sorties on 21 September. HELENA and MADDOX provided gunfire
support for the troops moving north in the Pohang area. DOYLE supported
the 25th U.S. Infantry Division from Chinhae Bay. KENYA, CONCORD,
and CHARITY patrolled the area north of Inchon, while CAYUGA, ATHA-
