Situation in Brief: GROUND The Eighth Army on all fronts advanced without major enemy opposition. In the 25th U.S. Infantry Division zone, the 24th U.S. RCT made a sweep of 20 miles to 9 miles north of Kurye, while other elements of the Division advanced 14 miles northwest of Chinju. Elements of the 2d U.S. Infantry Division captured Koryong, while the 38th U.S. RCT mov- ing northwest of Anui seized Tochon, As elements of the 1st U.S. Cavalry Division mopped up in the Tuksong area, elements of the 7th U.S. Cavalry RCT advanced northeast of Ansong. The 1st ROK Division advanced to 6 miles west of Chongju. The 6th ROK Division reached Mungyong; the 8th ROK Division encountered an enemy battalion 5 miles northwest of Punggi; the ROK Capitol Division moved to Yongwol; and the 3d ROK Divi- sion advanced to 7 miles north of Ulchin. U.S. flags were raised over the Korean Government House and the U.S. Consulate in Seoul, as U.N. forces continued to mop up enemy forces in the northern and northeastern suburbs of the city. (FECOM)(SECRET) NAVY Naval ships continued patrolling all Korean waters, but no targets for gunfire support were assigned, nor any enemy activity observed. Naval aircraft struck transportation facilities in the Seoul area, and flew close support missions. (COMNAVFE) (SECRET) AIR On 27 September, FEAF aircraft flew a total of 407 sorties, in- cluding 185 combat. Adverse weather and the dwindling number of targets resulted in the Fifth Air Force flying about half the usual number of close support sorties, On 28 September, FEAF Bomber Command dispatched 56 B-29's to attack marshaling yards, bridges, and rail lines.
