1. Situation in Brief:
GROUND
Organized resistance is disintegrating as the Eighth Army advanc-
ing to the west and north meets only scattered remnants of enemy units.
Elements of the 25th U.S. Infantry Division advanced westward to Tamyang.
Eighty U.S. PW's were liberated at Namwon. The 2d U.S. Infantry Division
entered Chonju. After eliminating resistance 6 miles east of Taejon, ele-
ments of the 24th U.S. Infantry Division entered the town unopposed. On
the east coast, the 3d ROK Division advanced northward through Samchok,
encountering light scattered resistance. In the Seoul area, strong combat
patrol action was initiated to destroy the remaining enemy. Early on 29
September, small-scale counterattacks were repulsed by the 1st U.S.
Marine Regiment in the northeastern portion of Seoul, and by the 17th ROK
Regiment, 6 miles east of the city. (FECOM)

NAVY
On the east coast, HELENA; MOORE, MANSFIELD, SWENSON,
and ENDICOTT, paralleling the northward advance of the ROK Army,
blasted pockets of enemy resistance as requested, and denied the use of
the coastal highway to the fleeing enemy. MADDOX and THOMAS maintained
the sea blockade above the 38th parallel. Naval ships patrolling the west
coast continued ready to provide call fire support. Naval aircraft, flying
137 sorties, assisted the street fighting in Seoul, and ranged the surrounding

AIR
On 28 September, 721 effective sorties, including 342 combat, were
flown. Seventy-one additional sorties found no targets. On 29 September,
40 B-29's were dispatched. (FEAF)(SECRET)
2. Weather:
Scattered low clouds, becoming broken over southeast coast.
Visibility unrestricted. Forecast for 30 September: Scattered low, middle,
