1. Situation in Brief:
GROUND
Elements of the 1st U.S. Cavalry Division threw two bridgeheads
across the Imjin River, 10 miles southeast of Kaesong. The 6th ROK
Division attacked north toward Hwachon. Stubborn opposition was en-
countered by the 3d ROK Division north of Changjon. PW's indicate a sus-
tained defense of the Wonsan area. The ROK Capitol Division is striking
southwest from Hwangpo toward Yanggu. The 8th ROK Division is assem-
bling in Uijongbu preparatory to an attack north. The 2d U.S. Infantry
Division estimates more than 5,400 enemy troops concentrated in five
pockets within its zone. (FECOM) (SECRET)
NAVY
Patrols off the east and west coasts met no enemy land or sea
activity. A special anti-mine air search area was established between
37-35N and 39-00N on the west coast A new task element of a minesweeper
destroyer, and helicopter was established to support the ROK advance toward
Wonsan. (COMNAVFE) (SECRET)
AIR
On 5 October, FEAF flew 484 sorties, including 256 combat.
Combat Cargo Command lifted 993 tons. On 6 October, 42 B-29's were
dispatched to attack Kan arsenal, bridges north of the 39th parallel, and
marshaling yards at Susong. (FEAF) (SECRET)

Scattered low clouds, visibility 10 miles except 2-4 miles in ground
