Situation in Brief: The advance on Pyongyang continued as the 1st ROK Division moved to within 8 miles east of the city; the 24th U.S. Infantry Division captured Chaeryong; and the 1st U.S. Cavalry Division, seizing Hwangju, moved to within 17 miles of the capital. Elements of the 8th ROK Division thrust northward to cut the enemy's east-west main supply route at Yang- dols, while other elements, advancing northwest, reached Insong. The 6th ROK Division, driving west to meet the 8th ROK Division, was 7 miles northwest of Tongyang. The ROK Capitol Division occupied the twin in- dustrial cities of Hungnam and Hamhung against negligible opposition. Planes from PHILIPPINE SEA, LEYTE, BOXER, and VALLEY FORGE ranged over targets in the northeastern sector of Korea. HELENA and WORCESTER bombarded military targets in the Songjin area (40-40N/ 129-12E). Aircraft from THESEUS struck port installations on the west coast. Naval planes flew 215 sorties on 17 October, and U.N. aircraft under FEAF control, flew 306 sorties, including 163 combat. On 18 October, 29 B-29's visually attacked targets in the Pyongyang and Sinanju areas with fair to excellent results. (FECOM)(SECRET) 2. Weather: Broken clouds, bases 3,000 feet, over all Korea.
