The President CRET Washington, D. C. 21 October 1950 1 JOINT DAILY SITREP NO. 116 (maps attached) From 0700/20 (EST) to 0700/21 (EST) From 2100/20 (Korea) to 2100 (Korea) 1. Situation in Brief: U. N. troops eliminated organized hostile resistance in Pyongyang. A Task Force of the 1st U.S. Cavalry Division advanced north from the city and made contact at Sunchon with the 187th U. S. Airborne RCT. The 6th ROK Division entered Sunchon from the east to link-up with U. S. forces. The 8th ROK Division reached the east bank of the Taedong River west of Kangdong. On the east coast, operations were hampered in the Wonsan area by heavy rains. South of Wonsan a hostile force of 2,000 North Koreans cut friendly communications below Kojo. The ROK Capitol Division advanced 22 miles to Tangpung. The adverse weather and low visibility in the Wonsan area limited friendly minesweeping and naval air operations. The ROK Navy landed a battalion of ROK Marines at Mokpo. Naval air flew 110 sorties on 20 October and U. N. aircraft under FEAF control flew 428 effective sorties, including 205 combat. Strategic Reconnaissance aircraft, observing the Antung area from 5 miles south of the Manchurian border, encountered 30 bursts of probable 90-mm flak, at 7,000 feet, originating from the Manchurian side of the Yalu River. Air cover was provided for the operation in the Sukchon-Sunchon area as friendly aircraft attacked and destroyed ammunition dumps, tanks, fortified buildings and troops, both before and during the airdrop of the 187th U. S. Airborne RCT. (FECOM) (SECRET) 2. Weather: Low scattered clouds over North Korea with visibility 10 miles, lowering to 1 to 3 miles in early morning haze. Low overcast over southern Korea with visibility 6 miles, lowering to 1 mile in intermittent rain and fog. Forecast: Low scattered clouds over all Korea with visibility 10 miles, lowering to 1 to 3 miles in early morning haze.
