1. Situation in Brief:
In the 1st ROK Division sector, the 15th Regiment attacked north
against moderate resistance, and the 12th Regiment advanced to Yonsong.
Leading elements of the 6th ROK Division advanced 22 miles north-north-
east of Yongbyon without meeting any resistance. The 8th ROK Division
was engaged by 2 companies in the Tokchon area, while an estimated enemy
battalion withdrew to the north. Elements of the ROK Capitol Division ad-
vanced northward to Iwon and to Chori. Aircraft of Task Force 77 struck
interdiction targets in north Korea. Minesweeping operations continued in
Wonsan with planes from U.S. escort carriers providing air cover. Mine-
sweepers also worked off Haeju, while U.N. ships patrolled off Wonsan and
Ongjin. Naval air flew 302 sorties on 24 October, and FEAF aircraft flew
474 effective sorties, including 145 combat. For the first time since air-
lift operations were instituted, Combat Cargo Command sorties equalled
all other types combined. (FECOM) (SECRET)
2. Weather:
North Korea: Scattered low clouds. South Korea: Scattered low,
middle, and high clouds, Visibility in all areas 10 miles, except 1 to 3
miles in early morning haze and ground fog in valleys. (FEAF) (SECRET)
3. United Nations Situation:
GROUND
a. U.S. Eighth Army: The 2d U.S. Infantry Division is to assume
operational control of the 187th U.S. Airborne RCT. The Division is to be
released from the operational control of U.S. I Corps and to revert to Army
reserve. At 0730/23 (KT), other units that were released from the opera-
tional control of U.S. I Corps and reverted to U.S. Army control were the
1st U.S. Field Artillery Observation Battalion, the 17th U.S. Field Artillery
Battalion, and the 78th U.S. AAA Gun Battalion. (FECOM)( (SECRET)
