Situation in Brief: With the ordering of the U.S. I Corps to withdraw the bulk of its forces to the south bank of the Chongchon River from the west coast to Kunu, and to secure the tank fords for an early renewal of the offensive to the north and west, the 24th U.S. Infantry Division and the 27th British Commonwealth Brigade began the tactical withdrawal to defensive positions along the Chong- chon and Taeryang Rivers. Heavy resistance from strong enemy forces pre- vented the 5th and elements of the 7th U.S. Cavalry RCT's from reaching the 8th U.S. Cavalry RCT (-) which was isolated by a hostile envelopment in the Unsan area. The 1st U.S. Cavalry Division is being withdrawn to an assembly area in Sunchon. The 1st ROK Division established defensive positions in the Yongbyon area, reorganizing elements which filtered back thru enemy lines. The enemy continued to press the attack southward along the Chongchon River, causing the 7th ROK Division to withdraw to approximately 2 miles north of Kunu, Friendly air has observed considerable enemy vehicular traffic crossing the Yalu River into Korea. Aircraft from U.S. escort carriers made highway interdiction and airfield sweeps on the east coast, and acted as escorts for FEAF cargo air drops. Minesweeping operations continued on both coasts, while destroyers and destroyer escorts stood by for gunfire support missions at several points on the east coast. Naval air flew a total of 140 sorties on 2 November, and U.N. aircraft under FEAF control flew 580 sorties, including 250 combat. (FECOM) (SECRET) 2. Weather: Clear to scattered, cloud bases at 3,000 feet except over Wonsan, where overcast low clouds were present until 0900. Forecast: Broken low, middle, and high clouds, with visibility 10 miles, lowering to one mile in snow and rain showers. (FEAF) (SECRET) 3.
