Situation in Brief: The enemy remained quiet, as Eighth Army troops continued to consolidate defensive positions. Patrols of the 27th British Commonwealth Brigade, 24th U.S. Infantry Division, and 1st U.S. Cavalry Division found little contact to the immediate front. However, elements of the 7th ROK Division drew heavy fire from the vicinity of Won; and determined resis. tance by an estimated 1,000 enemy dug-in on the hills in the Tokchon area developed when elements of the 8th ROK Division made a limited attack. Tokchon and the high ground to the north are now in friendly possession. Elements of the 38th U.S. Infantry RCT established blocking positions north and least of Yongdong, while other elements of the 38th RCT, attacking to seize the high ground 3 miles southeast of the town, encountered strong resistance. The 3d ROK Division eliminated small enemy groups in the Yongtaeng area. The 1st U.S. Marine Regiment continued the security of the Wonsan area, while the 5th U.S. Marine Regiment advanced to Tokhung and the 7th U.S. Marine Regiment to Pohujang. Contact between the elements of the 5th U.S. Marine Regiment and the 7th U.S. Infantry Division was established at Tangpung. Task Force 77 planes scored direct hits on 2 Yalu River bridges, while aircraft from escort carriers provided close air support for the 7th U.S. Infantry Division near Pungsan. Minesweeping continued on both coasts, and cruisers and destroyers stood by for gunfire support. Naval air flew a total of 188 sorties on 8 November, and FEAF aircraft flew 547 effective sorties, including 230 combat. Excellent results were obtained from a bombing attack on Sinuiju.
