JOINT DAILY SITREP NO. 134
(maps attached)
From 0700/13 (EST) to 0700/14 (EST)
From 2100/13 (Korea) to 2100/14 (Korea)
1. Situation in Brief:
United Nations Forces pushed slowly but steadily forward along
the Chongchon River toward their line of departure objective, but the
offensive initially scheduled for 15 November, has been postponed because
of logistic difficulties. On the Eighth Army left flank, the 1st ROK Division
and the 27th British Commonwealth Infantry Brigade patrolled extensively
without making enemy contact, while the 24th U.S. Infantry Division ad-
vanced up to 2 miles against light and scattered resistance. The 1st U.S.
Cavalry Division captured key terrain positions in the Yongbyon and Won
area against stubborn delaying action. The situation in the ROK II Corps
zone improved considerably as the 6th ROK Division counterattacked and
restored its previously lost positions, and the 7th ROK Division swung to
the right and attacked northwest toward Tokchon. The Division's 8th
Regiment encountered a hostile regiment near Wolbong Mountain, while
the 3d and 5th Regiments reported no opposition. In the center of the
United Nations' line, elements of the 10th ROK Regiment are advancing
east to contact elements of the 65th U.S. RCT driving west in the vicinity
of Sansong. In the U.S. X Corps zone, the 7th U.S. Marine Regiment ad-
vanced 3,000 yards in bitterly cold weather to within 4 miles of the Changjin
Reservoir, On the east coast, enemy troops supported by 4 tanks, attempt-
ing a double envelopment, made unsuccessful counterattacks against the
18th ROK Regiment south of the Myonggan River at Ipsok and Yangchon.
A 6 inch snowfall has been reported in this general area. Activity in other
zones within the U.S. X Corps sector was confined to patrol action. Carrier
planes from TF 77 attacked targets in north and northeast Korea. Two U.S.
ships rendered fire support for the ROK Capitol Division in the Myonggan
River area. On 13 November, Naval air flew 178 sorties, and U. .N.aircraft
under FEAF control flew 644 effective sorties, including 354 combat. On
