Situation in Brief: First Cavalry Division patrols advanced in the Yongbyon area, encountering no resistance. Civilians reported that the bulk of the Com- munist troops, including many Chinese Communist Forces, withdrew from the area during 12-14 November. The 9th U.S. RCT, however, met heavy resistance on the high ground 2 miles east of Won. Approximately 1 million rounds of small arms ammunition and 15,000 rounds of mortar ammunition were found in a warehouse in Kunu. Resistance continued strong in the ROK II Corps zone, preventing any significant advances by the 6th and 7th ROK Divisions. The 8th ROK Division recaptured Tokchon but received three night counterattacks, one of battalion and two of company strength. Despite frigid weather the 7th U.S. Division launched an attack early 14 November and was last reported making slow progress over icy roads. The 7th U.S. Marine Regiment advanced unopposed to the south end of the Changjin Reservoir. The 124th Chinese Communist Division, previously opposing the 7th U.S. Marine Regiment, was reported to have evacuated the area approximately 3 days previously. Numerous reports continue to be received of guerrilla activity in the area west of Wonsan and in the Pyonggang area. The remaining elements of the 7th U.S. RCT, 3d U.S. Infantry Division departed from Japan for Wonsan, Task Force 77 planes launched strikes from snow covered carrier decks in 26 degree weather. The ROCHESTER conducted night harassing and interdiction fire in support of the ROK Capitol Division on the east coast. Naval air flew 196 sorties during the period and U.N. aircraft under FEAF control flew 552 effective sorties, including 334 combat. B-29's attacked the Sinuiju bridges with 93 tons of GP bombs. (FECOM)(SECRET) 2. Weather: Scattered clouds at 3,000 feet over all Korea. Visibility 10 miles, lowering to 2 to 5 miles in smoke and haze in the late afternoon and early morning. FECOM Estimate of Enemy Situation: Since 31 October the strength of the remaining North Korean forces has been tripled through reinforcements from Communist China.
