The President see. 3402 June 18. Date, the Washington, D.C. 1 December 1950 JOINT DAILY SITREP NO. 146 1 (maps attached) From 0700/30 (EST) to 0700/01 (EST) DOD From 2100/30 (Korea) to 2100/01 (Korea) Billing, 1. Situation in Brief: The bulk of the U.S. Eighth Army troops began organizing a new defense line running east from Nosan to Sunchon thence southeast to Song- chon after a successful withdrawal from the Chongchon River bridgehead. Elements of the 2d U.S. Infantry Division were forced to battle their way through a strong hostile roadblock south of Kunu, but other army units reported little follow-up action. The 1st U.S. Cavalry Division, protecting the east flank in the Songchon area, reported no contact since early last night, except for a light exchange of small arms fire shortly before day- light. In the U.S. X Corps sector, the 5th U.S. Marine Regiment was mop- ping up a remaining enemy company in Changjin; however, the Marines continued to be heavily engaged in Yudam and Koto. A late report states that an estimated 2 CCF regiments, supported by artillery, launched a heavy attack at Changjin, but the attack was repulsed with numerous enemy casualties. Elements of the 7th U.S. Marine Regiment, moving south along the MSR from Yudam to Changjin, reported no enemy contact; however, other Division elements attempting to clear the MSR north from Koto to Changjin suffered heavy casualties in engagements with 3 enemy regiments. The MSR has also been cut 5 miles south of Koto by at least 500 enemy troops. On the east bank of the Changjin Reservoir, two isolated battalions of the 7th U.S. Infantry Division have been reported immobilized because of their inability to move 480 wounded. The Capitol ROK Division has been ordered to withdraw to Pukchong, while the 3d ROK Division will establish blocking positions on the U.S. X Corps right flank on the line Hyesanjin-Hapsu-Kilchu. Carrier planes conducted strikes against military installations, enemy troops, and supply areas. ST. PAUL conducted day and night fire against troops north of Chongjin. Naval air flew 467 sorties during 30 November, and U.N. aircraft under FEAF control flew 692 sor- ties, including 28 reconnaissance, 56 fighter control, 151 transport, and 457 combat.
