1. Situation in Brief:
The 7th U.S. Marine Regiment, leading the attack from Changjin,
closed in Koto on the morning of 7 December, while Division rear guard
elements were engaged in Changjin. Enemy efforts to prevent the friendly
retrograde movements along the Koto-Changjin axis continued to be mod-
erate to heavy, with an estimated 150 enemy resisting from the high
ground approximately 1 mile south of Koto and with hostile forces deployed
along both sides of the MSR. At noon, elements of the 65th U.S. RCT con-
tacted 2 groups of enemy 5 miles northeast of Sinhung. This is the first
confirmed information of organized enemy units moving into the northeast
portion of the U.S. X Corps perimeter. The 17th U.S. RCT arrived at Ham-
hung. Elements of the 7th U.S. RCT repulsed a small scale enemy attack
in the vicinity of Majon, during the afternoon of 6 December. No enemy
contact occurred in the U.S. I Corps sector during the period, but in the
U.S. IX Corps sector several scattered contacts were made; the largest
contact was by elements of the 24th U.S. Infantry Division with an enemy
group of 200 to 300, 5 miles northeast of Suan. Contacts with smaller
hostile groups occurred to the north and northwest of that location. Elements
of the 5th and 8th U.S. Cavalry RCT's advanced northeast of Koksan en-
countering only light opposition, but later withdrew. Two small scale
enemy attacks were repulsed by other elements of the 1st U.S. Cavalry
Division. Elements of the 2d ROK Division engaged an estimated enemy
regiment 14 miles southeast of Yonchon, while elements of the ROK III
Corps encountered and eliminated numerous small enemy groups further
to the south. Aircraft from Task Force 77 and Carrier Task Group 96.8
attacked enemy troops and military installations with excellent results.
ST. PAUL, HANK, SPERRY, and ZELLARS carried out harassing and inter-
diction missions. Naval air flew 360 sorties on 6 December, and U.N. air-
craft under FEAF control flew 647 sorties, including 402 combat, 176 trans-
port, 60 fighter control, and 9 reconnaissance. (FECOM)(SECRET)
