1. Situation in Brief:
a. On 9 December, a snow storm restricted close air support as
the main body of the 1st U.S. Marine Division, with elements of the 7th U.S.
Infantry Division attached, continued to fight southward from Koto, and
elements of the 1st U.S. Marine Regiment reinforced, with Engineers
attached, attacked north from Pohu. These two forces, encountering moderate
resistance, closed to within 1 mile of each other, 3 miles south of Koto. No
hostile contact was reported during the period by the U.S. I and IX Corps as
they withdrew to predetermined delaying positions. The 1st ROK Division
remained in blocking positions to cover the withdrawal of the 25th U.S.
Infantry Division to an assembly area south of Kumchon, The 24th U.S.
Infantry Division was enroute to Uijongbu, The 6th ROK Division remained
in blocking positions pending the departure of the 1st U.S. Cavalry Division
from its present location to new delaying positions. Enemy forces varying
in strength up to regiment size continued in contact with ROK troops north
of the Taegong-Chunchon axis. All carrier planes were grounded due to
poor visibility and snow. ST PAUL and HANK fired night interdiction fire
on the approaches to Wonsan. SPERRY and ZELLARS fired similar missions,
protecting U.N. forces on the airstrip peninsula near Wonsan. Naval air
flew 187 sorties on 8 December, and U.N. aircraft under FEARF control
flew 437 sorties, including 273 combat and 119 transport. (FECOM) (SECRET)
b. On 10 December, despite intensified enemy action, the main
body of the 1st U.S. Marine Division met elements of the 1st U.S. Marine
Regiment 1 mile north of Pohu. The combined force immediately resumed
the withdrawal south and advanced to within 1 mile of Sudong. Principle
engagements in the U.S. Eighth Army sector occurred near Yongpyong where
eleements of the 2d ROK Division encountered stubborn resistance, and
elements of the 5th ROK Division were attacked by an enemy company near
