U.S. X Corps Continued enemy pressure and attacks by enemy groups, up to battalion size, during 16 and 17 December caused troops of the U.S. X Corps to withdraw to the main line of resistance, a five mile are from Hungnam including the Yonpo airfield. Defense of the area is being maintained by the 3d U.S. Infantry Division and elements of the 7th U.S. Infantry Division. Probing attacks by small enemy groups to the northwest and southwest of Hungnam were made during 18 December. The Command Post of the 3d U.S. Infantry Division opened in the vicinity of Hungnam, while the U.S. X. Corps and 7th U.S. Infantry Division's Command Posts continued at Hungnam. ROK I Corps and the Capitol ROK Division are enroute to Samchok by water. The 7th RCT (-) of the 3d U.S. Infantry Division is in defense position in the vicinity of the Yonpo airfield. Elements of the 15th U.S. RCT attached to the 7th U.S. RCT repulsed an enemy attack 2 miles north of Yonpo. Other elements of the 15th U.S. RCT; preparing defense positions east of Hungnam, were re- leased to the 7th U.S. Infantry Division for operational control. The 65th U.S. RCT of the 3d U.S. Infantry Division is in position of the defense perimeter west of Hungnam.
