1. Situation in Brief:
U.S. I and IX Corps front line units remained in defense positions
while patrols in forward areas contacted several hostile units varying in
size up to reinforced company strength. To the east, the 5th ROK Division
continued its attack north of Chunchon against moderate to heavy resistance.
Gains of up to 3,000 yards were reported. The 2d ROK Division, on the left
of the 5th, and the 8th ROK Division on the right, continue to occupy defense
positions. ROK I Corps completed debarkation at Mukhojin and assumed
operational control of the 9th ROK Division. The Capitol ROK Division also
completed unloading at Mukhojin, and its 1st ROK Regiment departed for
Kangnung. Enemy pressure around the Hungnam perimeter lessened con-
siderably during the period. Elements of the 15th U.S. Infantry RCT reported
two minor engagements, while the 7th U.S. Infantry RCT received harassing
mortar and small arms fire. The 32d U.S. Infantry RCT outloaded at Hung-
nam, which completed the embarkation of the 7th U.S. Infantry Division,
except for elements of the 17th U.S. Infantry RCT, which are now under op-
erational control of the 3d U.S. Infantry Division. Naval gunfire supported
troops ashore and struck targets of opportunity. Aircraft from Task Force
77 and Task Group 96.8 supported friendly troops in the Hungnam area.
Naval air flew 225 reported missions, including 178 by CV aircraft, 29 by
CVE aircraft, and 18 by aircraft from the THESEUS. U.N. aircraft under
FEAF control flew 388 sorties including 240 combat. (FECOM)(SECRET)
