1. Situation in Brief:
Increased enemy probing activity was evident along the U.N. front,
and the continued concentration of enemy troops and supplies, particularly
in the Yonchon and Kumhwa areas, was disclosed by ground and air recon-
naissance, The attack of an estimated 2 enemy regiments against the defense
positions of the 21st ROK Regiment northeast of Chunchon was contained
during the late afternoon on 27 December, but enemy activity in the area
was continuing on 28 December. Further to the east, an estimated enemy
battalion offered light resistance and withdrew northward in the face of an
advance of the 22d ROK Regiment in the vicinity of Oksan. Planes from
Task Group 96.8 flew 46 sorties in close support of the troops south of the
Hwachon Reservoir, U.N. aircraft under FEAF control flew 671 sorties.

2. Weather:
Clear throughout Korea until 0500/28 (KT) when low overcast
clouds and snow showers moved over Korea from the northwest, Visibility
was good except in snow showers. Forecast: Overcast with low and middle
clouds, and snow showers, clearing with the frontal passage about 0500/29

3. United Nations Situation:
a. U.S. Eighth Army: The 1st U.S. Marine Division was attached
to the U.S. X Corps for operational control. The 23d U.S. RCT of the 2d U.S.
Infantry Division was enroute to the Wonju area. The Netherlands Battalion
arrived in Mungyong and was attached to the 9th U.S. RCT. (FECOM)(SECRET)
b. U.S. I Corps: West of the Imjin River, opposite the 25th U.S.
Infantry Division sector, an enemy concentration is indicated. A group of
approximately 600 enemy troops were observed moving southeast from Kae-
song, and a larger group of unidentified persons estimated at 5,000 was ob-
served northwest of Munsan. The 25th U.S. Infantry Division and 1st ROK
Division maintained their defense positions along the Imjin River and contin-
ued to patrol. The 29th United Kingdom Infantry Brigade Group, in Corps re-
serve, patrolled rear areas. (FECOM) (SECRET)
