1. Situation in Brief:
The U.S. I and IX Corps units defending the Seoul bridgehead, generally
from Todang to Uijongbu to Susong, received 6 hostile attacks shortly after day-
break on 3 January. The 25th U.S. Infantry Division received an attack of un-
known strength on its right flank, approximately 9 miles northwest of Seoul,
which was contained at 1130/03(KT). The 24th U.S. Infantry Division repulsed
3 company-size attacks in an area 2 miles south of Uijongbu. The 29th British
Commonwealth Infantry Brigade also repulsed an attack on its left flank in the
vicinity of the attack against the 25th U.S. Infantry Division; however, another
attack by an enemy battalion made some penetration 6 miles southwest of
Uijongbu, but was contained as of 1200/03(KT). All elements of the 1st ROK
Division, except the 11th ROK Regiment, attached to the 29th British Common-
wealth Infantry Brigade, passed through Seoul enroute to occupy defense posi-
tions south of the Han River. All regiments of the 6th ROK Division are cur-
rently reorganizing south of the Han River preparatory to occupying assigned
defense positions. The largest engagement during the period occurred 6 miles
north of Kapyong where 2 enemy regiments surrounded the 31st Regiment of
the 2d ROK Division. As of 0800/03(KT), the 2d ROK Division was reported
overrun with 2 regiments cut off. The 28th and 29th Regiments of the 9th ROK
Division were both reported engaged with units of battalion strength, and
slightly southeast of Yongpo 1. battalion of the 28th Regiment was surrounded
and another was disorganized. Elements of the 2d U.S. Infantry Division and
3d ROK Division eliminated stubbornly defended roadblocks midway between
Hongchon and Hoengsong. Progress of the withdrawal of the ROK I, II, and
III Corps to the new defense line was not reported. The U.S. X Corps opened
its Command Post in Chungju and assumed operational control of the 2d U.S.
Infantry Division at 1800/02(KT), and the 2d, 5th, and 8th ROK Divisions at
1200/03(KT). The 3d U.S. Infantry Division will move 2 regiments to the
Ansong-Pyongta.ek area beginning on 4 January. Carrier aircraft conducted
a total of 182 sorties in close support, interdiction, and armed reconnaissance
in the forward areas, with excellent results. U.N. aircraft under FEAF control
flew a total of 848 sorties. (FECOM) (SECRET)
