On 6 January, hostile activity centered along the Hongchon- Hoengsong corridor where elements of the 2d U.S. Infantry Division, in blocking positions 7 to 12 miles south of Hongchon, and the 7th ROK Divi- sion (-) were engaged with enemy groups varying up to approximately bat- talion size. One enemy force attacked; overran a roadblock defended by a company of the 2d U.S. Infantry Division; captured the defending mortars and turned them on the friendly troops. Two regiments of the 7th ROK Division, attacking east from Wonju toward an assigned sector east of Haanhung, reported contact with an enemy force of undetermined size. Air sightings indicated an estimated 12,000 to 15,000 enemy troops located slightly east of Haanhung, and that all towns and villages in this area were jammed with hostile troops and supplies. The only contact reported in the U.S. I and IX Corps sectors occurred approximately 8 miles south of Seoul where elements of the 1st ROK Division were engaged with an enemy bat- talion at 1200/06 (KT). The attack continued until 1400, at which time the enemy unit withdrew north after suffering numerous casualties inflicted by friendly artillery fire. In the U.S. X Corps sector, the 2d ROK Division was enroute to Yongchon-ni, 5 miles south of Chungju, to become Corps Reserve; the 5th ROK Division was enroute to defend the Corps west flank of Defense Line "D": the 8th ROK Division was enroute to positions on the right of the 5th ROK Division; and the 7th was enroute to an assembly area near Chechon. The 9th and Capitol ROK Divisions were enroute to or occupying positions on Defense Line "D". The 3d ROK Division was enroute to Pyongchang. Guerrillas were reported active south of Tanyang with the largest forces estimated at 1,500 reputedly having the mission of cutting the Sangju-Mungyong Main Supply Route. U.N. aircraft under FEAF control flew 820 sorties on 5 January, and Task Force 77 planes hit troop concentrations on the east coast, destroying villages, and inflicting heavy casualties; while Task Group 96.8 aircraft provided close air support north of Seoul. U.N. surface ships conducted shore bombardments of both coasts. (FECOM) (SECRET) b.
